The base layer is really shitty soft dirt, then hardcore (the orange dirt, 10 quid a ton) then topsoil, then a layer of fine hardcore.

You pay for the dirt yourself then? Or is it council funded?

 One of the dirt society members paid for the dirt, council give us minimal funding. The resurfacing/remodelling of half of the track and this cost over 3000 and its come from societys members pockets, and minimal money from the council. We're trying to run as meany events as possible and sell merch and stuff to fund it.
