sorry man I answered the question on another pic.
"I dipped them in lye to remove anodising then wet sanded 1000, 2000, 3000. For polishing i used meguiars 105 and a medium cut foam pad on d/a buffer. I finished them off with optimum metal polish/sealer and a fine foam pad on the d/a."

How did you keep the spider black?
  • 2 1
The cranks are anodised but the spider is powder coated. I used lye to strip the anodising off of the cranks. Lye doesn't strip paint...

Excellent, i thought as much. For those in the uk - lye = caustic soda.

Are you sure the spider is powdered? Mine look straight ano see.
  • 1 0
yep i'm sure. the lye (caustic soda) only stripped the cranks. I had them fully submerged in the stuff. The spindle, spider and the shimano logo must be painted.

Excellent. Im looking for a set to do the same.

It looks a bit tricky to get round near the spier though, could you not use a smaller buffer there, say on a dremel?
  • 1 0
It is a little tricky around the spider with a big buffer. You can tell in the pic I didn't buff too much around there. I wasn't being too picky when I did them, figuring they were going to get scratched up anyway. funny thing, it's actually the one spot that doesn't really get hit by your shoe.. I'm sure a dremel would be perfect. I'll have to get my hands on one and fix them up a bit.

Thanks for the help. I was planning on using a dremel for the tiny bits. Should work.
