Hell yeah bro.....that is so cool.Every few months my 66y/o Dad and myself go to the local special school on a saturday afternoon to repair the bikes they have there. These kids trash these bikes so hard. They mainly ride to learn motor skills and balance but some enter bike races (around a paved loop) and we have to get them ready. We have the support of a LBS who gives us tubes and cables etc but we mostly rebuild shit as we try to keep the costs down so the LBS stays keen to get there logo on the weekly news letter sent home each week. The best part is seeing the kids when we were invited as VIPs to one of the race days.Whats even more special is my Daughter is one of the kids that rides and attends the special school.Dont for a minute think what you have done is not appreciated mate......in some way its life changing stuff and for you to get this letter means there are good humans out there.

Thanks Sam. The city that did this is doing it 2 times this year-July AND December. The college kids here (Uni of Illinois) just up and leave all kinds of bikes. They usually sell off all the good bikes on EbaY and CraigsList to generate revenue,.but the crappy bikes that need work get given away. This year I'm being allowed to take 2-3 days *before* the giveaway to "triage" and work on the bikes so they're not all lined up for 2 hrs after the event Eek This effort also landed me on all 3 major tv News reports and in BOTH of our local Newspapers. One on the FRONT PAGE!! I knew the organizing copper-a chic :Wink : *before* she had a badge 15 years ago. I saw her name attached to the article preceding the event so I called her up and asked if I could do this. The Police Chief said,."Oh HELL ya he can"!!

Nice thing you and your shop does Sam! I wish our shop had the funds to giveaway goodies like that,.even if it was just to get our name out there. A form of advertising ya know. But my Boss says the coffers are quite empty these days.

We have a summer camp here called "Lose The Training Wheels" and we order in alot of xtra bikes for that. It's in mid-late June every year here. The local AMBUCS kicks in and gives what they call "scolarships" to some of the less fortunate kids here. It's more like a sponsorship in the sense that,.according to the parents income level,.they pay *some*,..or *all* of the cost of the bike and a helmet. The bikes HAVE to be a coaster brake type,.and I MUST install a rear handbrake on them. Regardless of the bike I have to install one. There is a Torker 24" cruiser that has a brake bridge that is WAY HIGH that I can just BARELY make a brake fit and grab rim instead of tire. I mean by like 1/16"-1/8". I even have to wallow out the brake hole in the bridge a lil to tilt it down juuust enuf. I really enjoy seeing the kids that learned to ride without training wheels out in public riding afterwards. 3 or 4 of the kids/parents are now great customers of mine.
