I think they cut the muscle open to let it breathe and allow the swelling to go down..

Broke my leg and got compartment syndrome so they had to cut it open to release the pressure but they weren't able to close it, so they had to skin graft it. This is about a month after the graft. Doc said it doesn't look like the graft took in the bottom, that's where he scooped out a chunk of dead muscles.
