Good question - I would say what is rideable on the descent for experts and possible on the bike. So you acctually ride and not walk, downclimb long sections of trail. For example Ojos del Salado is higher but above Caldera (6720 m) there are sections of rock climbing and it is not possible to ride upper part from the summit. When we ride in the Alps it is not even close to all rideable!
For sure in the future someone might find a higher rideable peak we don't know of yet - but I think that's the beauty of setting a stepping stone to bigger pursuits 😊

I don't name the bikes but Rea is insisting all the time I should. So maybe it is time?

For me I prefer not to use spare tubes on rides so heavy rear tire that performs for me for few years now was the perfect choice and I don't regret any gram of it. You probably won't believe it but I still ride 11 speed drivetrain and as you said 11 speed chain is maybe more durable and for sure much cheaper😅

@southoftheborder: you're right, and we apologize for not including these details in the article! We spent so much time planning and being there, to us it felt like just the name of the peak was enough (and there is location when you click on photo - Argentina, San Juan as you have said). In our efforts to be conscise we missed this, unsure if there is a way to add this info now. We loved Argentina and the people there, any omission of the country was unintentional.

@BenPea: For descend we rearranged the load. So we carried one extra heavy and big round on foot then retured and rode the same section with a bike and "manageable" backpack I would say around 15 kg. It was important to keep backpack at shoulder height or lower otherwise it hits the helmet all the time making it impossible to look ahead. But for sure after expedition ridding with normal mountainbike backpack felt very freeing😊
