@bendrew: Would you also be happy if Specialized had a proprietary wheel size that only worked with Spec wheels and frames? If Trek could only take the Trek 32.5mm seatpost? Your argument is false equivalency. MTBs have always had modular componentry, and it's what allows us to spec the bikes how we want. SRAM have chosen to take away that decision from the consumer which is questionably ethical, but definitely a stupid business decision.

However, anyone wishing to purchase these brakes who has a Shimano shifter will need to either source an adapter or shift to a SRAM drivetrain, And anyone with a bike that has Mavens who wanted to try a Shimano drivetrain will have a lot of hurdles to overcome. This can be interpreted in two ways: 1: SRAM is limiting their customer base by making a change that offers no functional gain. 2: SRAM Is forcing the market to follow their way of doing things, which is just malicious. If they honestly believed that their lever design was superior, and they wanted to capture as much market share as possible, they could very easily offer an adapter for Shimano and even Microshift shifters. Them not doing so is just in design cockblock.
