For the last 6 months film maker Liam Murphy along with Cognation have been following the construction of BikePark Wales, the UK’s very first large commercial bike park. Liam has been there through the highs and lows of the construction process and created an amazing insight to the driving forces behind this project.
In episode one we join the team as construction on site begins. 4 years after work on the project began back in 2009, ground was finally broken in February 2013. The team is nervous, but excited about the task ahead as the visitor centre is laid out and construction of the trails begins. The first dig day brings an amazing turnout of volunteers and new friendships are forged through a mutual desire to create something positive.
BikePark Wales opens to the public on Saturday 24th August and you can book uplift online on the BikePark Wales website now.

As for Whistler, well I doubt it first opened it's doors the way it is now, and whilst it is a very special place with justifiably famous and almost mythical trails, riders visiting from Europe for the first time might be surprised that it's not as big as you might think, certainly it's no where near the size of the Port du Soleil, but the Whistler trails are better managed. I can see no reason why in the next 10 year BPW couldn't grow to the size of Whistler 2013 even without a lift.
I know that a lift is a long term goal for organisers, but without a lucrative Winter Ski season to subsidise it, it might never happen, the costs in terms of construction are massive, but more importantly things like operating it, maintaining it and having things like emergency evacuation plans in place make it far more costly to operate than a lift.
and the welsh nationals are being held there. and hopefully a BDS race next yr
