Jun 4, 20251984ish Battaglin/Gardin rebuilt SALE PENDING
$500 CADMy tradesperson husband, who passed away a few years ago, liked to rebuild vintage bikes and i’m finally parting with the last one. I’m not real bike smart but I believe it is a 12 speed and it looks like the chainring has 42 and 52 tooth rings. There are no markings on the tires (holding air but really old) so i’m not exactly sure of the size but I think they are 630s, could be 700 though. There is no size markings on it but I believe it is a Medium, as that is what all his other bikes were. To the best of my unskilled understanding…
- the stack height is ~22.5-22.75”
- reach ~15-15.5”
- ground to top of top bar (crotch height) is ~32”. these seems pretty correct as i think Bri had a 32ish inseam for jeans and i’m a 31” inseam and i can straddle it, but on the ball of my foot abit
I’ve never shipped a bike so indicated pick up only but am willing to try shipping if talked through it and buyer pays.
This was his personal bike that he purchased early 80’s and he is the only person to have ever ridden it. I can’t recall what year he bought it in but I have some pics of him riding it in 1984 so likely he bought it in ‘83 or early ‘84. I don’t know a lot about it, except to know that it’s pretty nice, but have posted some information from a post he did on a Vintage Bike Forum….
“Originally sold as a Gardin, although the BB Shell and Head Lug are marked Battaglin. It also had some decals identical to period Battaglins but the seat stays are panto’d Gardin.
“Frame and components are excellent. The groupset is Super Record, although the rear hub is Miche.”
“Every piece that could come apart has been cleaned, polished and reassembled. The frame was stripped to bare metal, powder coated pearl white and I sprayed the Red Fade. Clear coat after the decals. This bike was never available in this paint, but it’s for me, and I’m pretty happy with the outcome”
Lastly, when he first suspected the bike was not really a full Gardin he posted on the Vintage site and received this reply …
“Giovanni Battaglin started his own company after winning the 1981 Vuelta and Giro on a Pinarello, Instead of Campagnolo, his pro team's bicycles were co-sponsored by Gipemme for 1982 to 1985. The Gipemme derailleurs were manufactured by Simplex and and used a non-standard front derailleur mount. To address this issue, the early consumer frames were equipped with Gipiemme front derailleurs as standard equipment. Consequently, I believe what you have is a later model”
