Video: How To Stop Going Over the Bars When Riding | How Not To Bike With Ben Cathro
You don’t need to be jumping to go OTB. When the front brake is not engaged, the center of the bike’s rotation forward is the front wheel hub. Engage the brake and then the center of rotation instantly moves down to the point of the tire contact with the ground. This explains why applying the front brake on a steep incline can cause in near instant endo or OTB without a change in body position. The required conditions are for the weight vector to be pointed down and forward but behind the front hub (stable without braking) but also forward of the wheel contact point. When the break engages and the contact point moves to the ground, the bike instantly becomes unstable and rotates forward. This can be demonstrated with the bike at a standstill on an inclined ramp.
