Using the same race-proven geometry as the World Cup carbon models, Scale 970 is a big step above the typical “entry level” MTB. With both 27.5” and 29” models, it’s hard- if not impossible- to find a better bike for the money. This is far from being a dumbed-down version of the more expensive models and is exceptionally capable on virtually any trail. Built from custom-butted 6061 aluminum tubes that are specifically shaped for their purpose within the structure of the frame, it’s a very solid bike that drops the competition handily. The oversized and tapered head tube keeps the front end stiff for steering precision, while the sculpted seat and chainstays keep the rear wheel driving you forward with each pedal stroke. Shimano’s venerable Deore components handle the shifting responsibilities, while the M395 hydraulic disc brakes with 180mm front and 160mm rear rotors provide unmatched braking performance in their category. The 40/30/22 Shimano triple crankset and 11-36 ten speed cassette provide an adequate gear range for nearly any conceivable trail condition. Saddle, seatpost, bar, and stem are all provided by legendary MTB parts brand Syncros. Maxxis Ikon tires are mounted to sturdy Syncros rims for reliable wheels that won’t let you down when your day is just getting good. Combined with a SunTour XCR RL-R fork with 100mm of travel and a remote lockout, it’s a fantastic parts package for the money. Where other bikes in this category rely on cutting corners on the parts, or the frame, and watered down geometry that delivers sluggish handling, the Scott Scale 970 lets its purebred racing pedigree shine through.
