Jamaicans Love to build cool bikes, and the Old School Riders Crew is no exception.

You may have seen these guys with their bikes in the video I posted in my blog post about the Jamaica Bicycle Bash. They're called the "Old School Riders" and I thought you might like to see some more shots of their sick custom rides.

Here they are...

I know a few people will probably ask how I shot these, so here's a little lighting diagram. The hard vignette is from the lens hood on my 17-55 DX lens used on my FX body.

nope, just straight SB800's I think the two together were at 1/4 and the single one was at 1/2 power, can't remember what the zoom was. And yes that does make the light the same on both sides. When I travel I usually bring 3 lights and using 2 at lower power makes my batteries last way longer, plus for action the duration is way shorter. Not that it mattered here...

Can u expand on freezing action? I seem to be running into problems with that.

Oh this is something I'd like to know also...I do a tiny bit of it when I'm shooting clubs since you are shooting with shutters of 1/3" and slower...but haven't gotten to really fiddle around with something a little faster Razz

yeah, I need to start doing that with my slower shots too, noticed on some I shot the other night that the duration on full was a bit longer & made a bit of a blur, otherwise I'm normally shooting in the day between 1/500th & 1/800th, so don't have any problems with those.

Loving those bikes, they each make their own?

They make their own bikes, weld them together from old bikes and whatever they have, I'll post a few more photos from a couple of years ago later today.

As far as flash duration goes it's the length of time that a flash is actually on for. Varies between 1/200th of a second and 1/10,000th of a second depending on the flash. Flashes use capacitors and it's based on a capacitance discharge curve. More expensive studio flashes and speedlights use an Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor or IGBT to shut down the flash tube and control the power lever and the duration. You can now get a studio flash pack that has 2400 WS or more and can shoot at 1/10,000 of a second at close to 9 frames a second. Of course you'll have to spend around $10,000 US for the pack and that doesn't include flash heads...

If you want to know more I'll be teaching several clinics this year, first one is at Sea Otter in April. I'll also be doing some more tutorials here on Pink Bike and on my own blog that cover the basics. You can find my howto blog at www.ianhylands.com/wordpress/category/howto

Why are you using the Nikkor 17-55 f/2.8 lens on a FX camera body?
  • 2 2
because it works great from about 28mm to 55mm and at 24-28 I get really cool vignetting like in these shots...
