First Look: The New TQ HPR60 Motor
TQ EMTB System known issues: 1-7 are motor related. 1. Drive unit overheats & cuts power to ~160w after 2-3km (overheating to the point of even the cranks being hot asf). Yes they can all overheat - but if yours is overheating this quick then this is an issue not a feature - a new motor will fix this. 2. The drive side crankshaft bearing in unsealed and can/will prematurely fail. 3. Cranks & Chainring come loose. 4. Torque/cadence sensor reading are not even remotely accurate (they are shitty sensors). But if they completely break (usually the torque sensor) they brick the motor. 5. Something inside can break and cause it to sound like a lopsided washing-machine occasionally with inconsistant power transfer. Also seen a clicking noise on a few too. Not sure what causes this but TQ seem happy enough to warranty these units. 6. Had multiple drive units with power surging issues. 7. Internal clutch (one way bearing) shats itself. See this. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/zDasOKPiVao 8. Display center button not sealed properly, lets water into screen 9. Remote button ('faster' particularly) breaking. This happens if the bike is left upside down resting on the button. Easy mistake, but don't do this. Use padding or supports or something. 10. Charge port bricks battery when wet. Solution: Ensure the silly finicky rubber cap IS ALWAYS properly closed 11. Battery swelling then delivering wrong voltage, bricking system. Solution: Don’t leave in direct summer sun unless can’t absolutely be avoided 12. Display powers off in heat/direct sun Solution: Don’t leave in direct summer sun unless can’t absolutely be avoided How TQ is addressing a few of these issues (to my knowledge) - The new HPR60 has cooling fins to stop overheating. Not sure if the V02 HPR50 motor addresses this in any way but I am personally yet to overheat mine. - Chainring lockring completely changed to now have a dust wiper to protect the unsealed DS motor bearing. - Official torque spec changed from 30nm to 50nm on chainring lockring. - There is a V02 display which has better sealing on its button which stops water getting in. If you have a V01 then don't hit the display with the pressure washer or cover the button with Gorilla tape - The clicking noise can be something internal but also can be if the cranks are not properly aligned with the spindle. The alignment indicator on the V01 motor is very easy to miss and many of the EXe's from the first 6 months had the cranks installed from factory misaligned. Overall seems like this new motor is a nice step forward. The HPR50 drained batteries so quickly so it'll be interesting to see how far this one can get with efficiency improvements. The cooling is nice and glad to see them addressing that (even though the issue weirdly only happened with select HPR50 units) and backwards compatibility is awesome. I honestly could not care less about each and every emtb feature or spec improvement - what we need is a system that can actually last beyond its 2 year warranty window.

First Ride: TRP EVO Pro Brakes
Is the PAD adjust similar to Lewis’s leverage ratio adjust (not a bite point adjust?). Interesting.
