ESCAPING
THE WINTER IN
BARCELONA
WORDS AND PHOTOS: JAN VOLBRACHT
Everybody knows this winter feeling: Sitting at home, outside it’s cold and rainy. Making the home trails muddy and slippery. While all the pinkbike, instagram and facebook feeds are full of photos, shot in beautiful sunny locations. Barcelona (Spain) for example, is one of the top winter locations in Europe. A metropolis city, with its beaches and great places for typical spanish Tapas. The best part though, they have rideable weather all year long! And the jumps at LaPoma Bikepark are just perfect. The LaPoma shape crew is doing an awesome job to keep the jumps in perfect condition. In addition to the maintenance work, they keep adding new lines, transferring options or expand their pumptrack every once in a while.
FMB World Tour riders from Europe and all over the world, come to spend part of the winter in Barcelona. Guys like Martin Söderström, Anton Thelander and Antonie Bizet meet up with locals like Andrea Lacondeguy to ride the trails. Everybody is preparing for the upcoming season. Taking their new set of tricks from the foam pit to the dirt. But its not the competition yet, the atmosphere is relaxed. So amateurs and pros share the jumps or play around in the bowl at the skatepark.
Being located next to the mediterranean sea has only one downside: It can be windy at a time. But Barcelona doesn’t let you down. The whole city is packed with skateparks to be explored. And the big amount of – more or less – secret street spots like the famous „Seawalls“ is impressive. On top, the backcountry mountains are full of trails for enduro action.
