Bike Check: The CoG Rebel Park Bike Developed by University Students
Thanks for all the feedback - both positive and critical. A bit of context: as Jessie-May has mentioned this was a final-year student project, taken from a blank sheet of paper to a finalised design in just 10 weeks, by only two of us, and that was alongside other university deliverables including writing a 12,000-word dissertation.
Mountain bike design isn’t something you can learn from a textbook like other fields of engineering; most of the knowledge sits inside the industry. That meant a big part of the challenge here was about discovery through reverse engineering, prototyping, and learning by doing.
This first prototype isn’t meant to be a finished commercial frame - it’s a starting point. We wanted to prove out the concept of a park bike with a super low centre of gravity, using a gearbox to keep the weight central and an e*thirteen Sidekick rear hub to mitigate pedal kickback. From here, testing will tell us what works, what doesn’t, and what to refine for the next iteration.
We’re proud of what’s been achieved under the constraints and grateful for all the feedback - it helps move the project forward.
