Life and Times of Pure Cycle Chapter 2

Road trip to Moab and fresh new Santa Cruz bikes in the shop!

At last check I was hard at it trying to prep the store for our Spring Sale. This was a big hit and everyone was happy. I was also enjoying some rare dry weather in March in Calgary and actually got to pound out a few rides. This was good as I was madly trying to get in shape for my first Moab trip in more than ten years. This trip was pretty unreal and we ended up doing 7 days in a row of riding. Check out some scenery below.

For those who have had the chance to ride here, you know how sweet the trails are and if you have not made the trip I recommend it. We shuttled Porcupine and rode from the top of the Kokopelli Trail twice while we were there and being a big, out of shape, downhill type guy I have to say this was the highlight for me. As you can see from the pic below my riding buddies are all built for uphill speed.

It takes a few hours to do this trail when you count all the photo stops and other goofing off, but we did it in just over two on our second time as we did not really do the tourist gig we just had at it. Lots of rock and tons of little drops and play spots. The last few kilometers is tight and tech and is among the best sections of trail anywhere. If you get a chance to ride a trail called Jackson's, I would say check it out as well. It is very technical and exposed, but pretty sweet. Just before we were about to leave Pothole Arch and do Jackson's my buddy Neal revealed that he had beer stashed in his bag with ice packs wrapped around them. This was like finding out I won the lottery!

About two days before my trip I got some good news in the form of some confirmation that Pure Cycle would be Calgary's newest Santa Cruz Bike dealer. By the time I had returned from the States we had some new goodies built up and on the floor. Check out this pic of the new Carbon Blur LT. Very sweet! We have a Nomad and a Blur LT in the house as well. Everybody in the shop is pretty stoked on the prospect of the new APP bikes coming down the pipe pretty quick. Stay tuned for more on this front. If you are a fan of the big wheels we should have a Tallboy built up fairly shortly as well.

I rode the Jumping Pound Loop (short one) in K-Country with our Tuesday night club ride and Derek from Calgary Cycle was on board a new carbon Blur LT and not long into the ride was super stoked especially on how stiff the bike was laterally. This latest crop of bikes like the LT and my new Remedy are game changers as far as I'm concerned. Super light and they will let you get away with a lot more than you might think or should be aloud to get away with. Stick a 2.35 Maxxis Minion on the front and get rippin' I say. I'm going to hijack his bike for a day or two soon and take it for some laps, so stay tuned for some feedback here and on our Facebook page. I'm already working on the next installment of this story which will hopefully include some helmet cam footage from some local spots. Keep pedaling until then!

Moab's so epic, riding Porcupine Rim in Springtime when the top of the trail is still covered in a light layer of snow is an amazing experience.

Porcupine Rim is the source. You just get on there and clock out on the rest of your life and concentrate only on the moment. It is Samurai style. You could ride this trail every day and it would not be a wasted life.

ya i went on porcupine rim during spring break and there was 2 feet of snow at the top so we had to go lower.

APP is a new series of bikes coming from Santa Cruz. Essentially a slightly more basic version of the VPP bikes.

 My opinion: Cool.

My reason: They got to enjoy "some rare dry weather", "my first Moab trip in more than ten years", and finally "my buddy Neal revealed that he had beer stashed in his bag with ice packs wrapped around them. This was like finding out I won the lottery!"
