Apr 28, 2020Santa Cruz Nomad Mk 1.5 - Medium
$850 USD2008 Santa Cruz Nomad – Mk 1.5 – One of the last made in America!
For sale is my medium Mk 1.5 Santa Cruz Nomad. Used but in good overall condition - $850 OBO
A bike that arguably helped propel the movement towards more aggressive trail bikes and led the all mountain category when that was still a thing. The frame has 165mm of rear travel via the VPP linkage supported by a Fox DHX5.0. Front travel is 160mm via a super adjustable Rock Shox Lyrik U-Turn coil fork; HSC, LSC, rebound, lock-out, and travel that is adjustable between 160mm and 115mm! Coils are cool again and this bike has them front and rear. 27 speed (3x9) drivetrain and hydraulic disc brakes (parts breakdown below). Bike would be perfect for somebody on a budget who is looking for one bike to do both local trail riding and light downhill at say Powder Ridge or Thunder Mountain! Again, the frame is a medium but top tubes/reach on SC frames used to be pretty short and at 5’9”-5’10”, I always felt a bit cramped, so would probably be best for somebody in the 5’5”-5’8” range, but could obviously work outside of that.
Only real issue/thing it needs is the rear brake; it drags and has corrosion on the lever body as seen in the photos. You can bleed it and sometimes get it working for maybe a couple rides but the same symptoms always come back eventually so you’d be better off replacing the whole brake assembly. I’m considering replacing the brake to help with the sale, but will update the listing if that is done. Otherwise everything else works as it should, suspension is smooth, shifts are crisp. Could use new grips but those are typically a personal preference item, so I likely won’t be replacing them but may have something I can throw-in if wanted. New wider bars would make it align better with current trends if that’s your thing. Bike was ridden and obviously has all your standard little scratches and spots of cable rub from normal wear and tear; plus, let’s be honest, SC was never known for their paint/frame finishes back then, so it always scratched pretty easy.
For those that are unaware, the 1.5 version is essentially the original Nomad, but they made some small tweaks and it came out late 2007 for the 2008 model year. The main difference is that the Mk 1.5 had a new head tube to accommodate stiffer forks with straight 1.5” steerer tubes. I believe there may have been some small changes to the linkage and perhaps some other things, but I honestly don’t remember. This is one of the last frames that Santa Cruz made in America before sending production overseas.
Bike is currently set up with a Maxxis Holy Roller DH rear tire; this tire has a DH casing with a DH inner-tube installed. The bike is sprung for somebody weighing about 200 lbs. The bike will come with a regular Kenda Nevegal tire and standard tube to match the front for trail riding, as well as stock springs which if I recall correctly were intended for somebody in the 160-170 lb range. Bike is being sold as-is with no warranty or guarantees and does not come with pedals. $850 OBO.
