The motor manufacturers have no involvement in developing battery cells—this is all done by larger, more important industries. Bike motor manufacturers simply buy the battery cells that are available.

You only need to notice the xtra-short cranksets put on motorbikes to know these are altogether different from a bicycle.
The crank arms are simply the switch to access motor power, they are no longer the means of delivering power.

Waaay back at the beginning of all this motor bike stuff some of us predicted that power wars were an inevitable human response. It was easily predictable that companies would compete based on power and that hobbyists would learn to hack the controllers for more power. We were accused of “slippery slope” argumentation, but it was easily predictable, and it’s come true.

“democratizing mountain biking”…if a person uses a motor and battery for propulsion, it’s not mountain biking by definition. It’s a different thing.
We never should have allowed this merging of motor power into the sport—it was done to us by companies that want to sell stuff.
