The Underdog Project - Moving On From 52 Weeks

by Ian Harvey
It has been a while since the end of Project 52 Weeks but I finally had chance to catch up with my good friend John Lee. It was soon clear that as much as he enjoyed the Mega Avalanche he is just as excited about his new project for 2011.

You would think after the effort and time time put into the 52 Weeks project John would have sat back and relaxed for a while but no. I met up with him at Alverstone BMX track in Derby to chat about the Mega and his latest project that revolves around his new Five Two Race Team. The project will be know as 'The Underdog Project' and will follow the team over their training and racing from now through 2011. Each rider will set themselves aims for the 2011 season and as the season unfolds you will get to see the triumphs and frustrations as they work towards them.

The team has been running for part of 2010 on the 4X circuit in the UK and already boasts the womens national series winner in Suzy Lacey.

The team has expanded over the last couple of months to include downhill riders and BMX riders. It would have been easy for John to look for established riders but instead the aim of the team is to find young raw talent with the potential and drive to succeed.

The two downhill riders came via the Cannock Chase Racers Guild, Lee Graton and Elliot Gill both have the skills to go far and will be racing downhill around the UK next year.

The 4X riders are the heart of the team led by John himself and Suzy Lacey. Other riders include Claire Pollard, Kieran Brown and Dom Barden. They will be racing in the NPS series next year among other events and I am sure John and Suzy will be trying to gain entry to world cup rounds.

The newest member of the squad is Jack Greene only 9 years old and representing the team on the BMX race track.

I like the sound of this, especially filming that captures athlete development. I find the Atherton Project quite entertaining because it's more than just riding, hopefully this will be similar! Oh, and Elliot is an awesome fella. Good to see a new shot of him riding again!
