Race Report: California Enduro Series Round 1 - Ensenada Enduro
We had an absolute blast at CES 1 in Ensenada! Lou, event organizer, and his team worked long and hard to tame some very raw and rocky terrain to make the trails manageable for our group’s diverse riding abilities! Traveling over the boarder and down the Baja coastline was beautiful and adventurous. The highways were in excellent shape but some unexpected dips caught me off guard as we hit them “blind” and gave me a brief rollercoaster feeling in my stomach. The roads in the town of Ensenada were of Enduro caliber as potholes could easily toast a tire and rim if I allowed myself to be distracted from navigating the smoothest line. I highly recommend driving something with ample tread and sidewalls. Horsepower Ranch and the people there were super nice! Be sure to bring Pesos!!! Beer is cold and they have a shuffle board and pool table. I can wait to return to Ensenada and I hope to hit some of the trails outside of the race Stages because there are a lot of them out there! The climb to the top of Stage 2 was a workout but worth it as it has amazing views of the city and coastline! The descent was rocky, technical, challenging and a real joy to complete without incident! The last two stages were more flowy and playful with a few kickers, gaps, and really cool rock features. The final stage “Sandy” was precisely that which made it fun to carve down. There were surprisingly several lines down some sections which gave us options. We were really lucky with weather as it rained a few days prior so really no dust and the temps were perfect! Drink a lot of water regardless!! In the pic of me above, green/black/gray Jersey, working on a bike, was at the bottom of Sandy. The guy on the far left struck his derailleur on a rock and sent it into the spokes, broke a few spokes as a result, and snapped his chain. We removed the derailleur and converted it to a single speed for the transfer back to The Ranch. Helping Bros our is what we do!!
