yeah it can be a bit damaging. I've seen plenty of crew cover there crank with a cut down road tube for protection.

hey mate,
the non drive crank arm slots into the metal bracket. Then they are held down with old tubes. The brackets are hollow and rectangular, with one side cut out to fit pedal. hope this helps.
