@crmcnicol: lactate is constantly produced by the body, used in both the aerobic and anaerobic energy systems. Aerobic energy production involves using lactate in the fat oxidation process, and of course it’s heavily produced during glycolysis under more anaerobic energy demands as the aerobic system can longer meet the energy demand. More than enough science that demonstrates why FTP has very limited relationship to your maximal lactate steady state or anaerobic threshold.

@gramboh: I haven’t seen enough data but in general think about the bigger picture here. You are burning energy in transition stages so you should count them. If you added up all the hours across a seasons worth of racing and seperate show much time was spent downhill/racing vs transition / uphill steady state? Wouldn’t this help guide where maybe some (not all) of the training focus should be? I expect that there is much more time in general spent in transition stages and uphill than perception says. Just an outsiders perspective on the topic.
