Sep 13, 2020Norco Range, Large Carbon 29er - price drop!
$3800 CADExtremely well maintained 2018 Norco Range 29er.
I was planning on keeping this bike long term, so spent a lot and upgraded almost everything when I moved to Squamish. Of course I got a great deal a new bike, so it's time to sell the Norco.
Highlights:
- Full carbon front triangle and seatstays. Alloy chainstays that have been upgraded to the most recent version a few months ago.
- Size large
- Sram Eagle GX drivetrain, X01 shifter.
- GX Chain and cassette have less than 5 rides on them. The chain checker won't even fit in the chain.
- The Blackspire oval chainring has 3 rides on it, so it's basically new.
- Raceface Aeffect 800 mm bar and 35 mm stem.
- New bottom bracket.
- DVO Diamond 160 mm forks with integrated mudguard. Stanchions in near new condition. Lowers serviced around 6 months ago. Fork bushings were burnished by Shockcraft last year.
- DVO Topaz T3 rear shock, serviced 1 month ago.
- OneUp v1 dropper, 170 mm, only 5 or 6 rides on it.
- 2.5" Assegai DH casing 3C front tire with less than 5 rides on it. Arguably the best tire out there for enduro riding.
- 2.35 Schwalbe Magic Mary on the rear.
- Tubeless front and rear, Stans NoTubes sealant.
- Both wheels are running true and the rims are is great shape. The bearings are spinning freely with no signs of play or wear.
- New metal brake pads front and rear with less than 5 rides on them, brakes bled at Tantalus a few weeks ago.
- New headset bearings, no play.
- No chips, gouges or large scratches on frame. Just normal wear and tear, see photos. Protective tape on the wear-prone areas.
- The bike is super tight, there's no play in the wheels, headset, fork, pivots, shock mounts, etc.
The bike is ready to ride, just put some pedals on and go. Nothing is worn or needs to be replaced and it's in excellent shape. You could leave it like it is or stick a 170 mm coil fork on it to really make it shine on the downhills. It's also a great trail bike, I was part of a winning three man team racing in a small six hour endurance XC race in New Zealand riding this bike. It's not an XC race bike but it's a good climber that shines on the downhills. I've also used it for a little bit of bikepacking and it's an excellent all-rounder.
I live in Squamish if you're close by and want to have a look.

The Matchup: 2020 Norco Optic or Sight? - Trail Bike vs All-Mountain Bike
@sewer-rat: A steel full suspension! That's pretty cool actually. I bet that'll be bombproof. There's a big part of me wondering if I should just buy something like a Chromag hardtail. They're so much simpler and steel is tough as hell. I haven't ridden a steel hardtail since I retired my 97 Kona Explosif many years ago.

The Matchup: 2020 Norco Optic or Sight? - Trail Bike vs All-Mountain Bike
@a-prince: Oh no! Gotta get that replaced before the warranty expires! At least you caught it before it cracked on the trail and damaged something else. It's not like it's a cracked head tube, it shouldn't be dangerous even if it did crack.
This is my dilemma now, do I keep the bike and hope it doesn't crack again or sell it and spend $4K on a new frame/shock/whatever. Maybe it's just time for a whole new bike and sell the Range? It's so expensive for something decent these days. A new bike should last a good 5 years, 2.5 years is shockingly bad.
My chainstays always crack at the hole in the chainstay brace. I might try reinforcing this hole by brazing a sleeve in this hole. My warranty is almost up anyway so why not? These cracks sure look like stress cracks to me. If that hole is reinforced it might not crack again. Pretty desperate measures!
This article sure looks like a Norco ad. Wouldn't it be great if Norco would respond and maybe do something about these issues?

The Matchup: 2020 Norco Optic or Sight? - Trail Bike vs All-Mountain Bike
If you downvoted this do you mind leaving a comment explaining why? Maybe you love your Norco and it's not cracked but that doesn't mean my experience is invalid.
One of the reasons I bought a Norco was I heard they had a good warranty program but I found it painfully slow and 3 years is a very short warranty period.
I had a Santa Cruz Nomad in the past and the warranty service was excellent, even though my frame was second hand. They're high on my list: Smash/Megatower/SB150/etc.

The Matchup: 2020 Norco Optic or Sight? - Trail Bike vs All-Mountain Bike
My 2018 Norco Range has been a real lemon. I wouldn't buy another Norco again. The chainstays look very similar to the Sight's chainstays and they crack at the brace behind the BB. I don't huck big air and I never break chains or rims but I do like to go fast. I'm on my 3rd chainstay and my 3 year warranty will run out later this year. I was charged more than $100 for shipping and installation costs of this new part even though the bike is still under warranty. Why would I want to support this company and their cheap and weak bikes? I'll get a tougher bike with a decent warranty next time. I'm thinking the Guerrilla Gravity Smash or something similar - all suggestions welcome!
