PRESS RELEASE: Broken & Coastal

We are proud to announce our 6th print issue, made possible in part thanks to support from industry leaders such as Rapha, Specialized, Easton, and Ride with GPS.

Ad-free, carefully curated, and always pushing design, Broken & Coastal is an independent print magazine for cyclists with courage — the non-traditionalists and the rule-breakers who dare to live life outdoors.

A platform for change, we aim to empower storytellers, inspire creativity, give to charity, support their communities, and do our part in making the world a better place.

“This new issue is special to me not just because we’re highlighting so many different BIPOC voices in all areas of cycling, but also because it’s the first time the industry has started to pay attention to us. And thanks to these industry partners we were able to start offering grants to contributors, which is something we've dreamed of doing since the start of this magazine,” said founder Christopher San Agustin.

Broken & Coastal launched its first issue back in 2016 in response to the cycling industry’s dividedness.

“Coming from BMX I was shocked at how separated the cycling industry was. There was nothing out there that represented the kind of cycling my friends and I were into — we’d be riding BMX one day and then loading up our steel road bikes to tour down the California coast, or race an elite level cyclocross race the next day. The industry felt broken in our eyes and this magazine was our way to build a narrative around what we think the cycling and outdoor industry at large should represent,” San Agustin said.

That first 50-page magazine has since turned into a 100+ page publication that has featured more than 50 contributors covering everything from BMX to professional road cycling.

In 2020, Broken & Coastal set out to further disrupt the norm by turning their small magazine project into a platform to not only support storytellers, photographers, and designers but to give back to their community by donating the proceeds from each issue to charity.

Proceeds of the sixth edition will benefit Ride for Racial Justice, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization which exists to ensure access to resources, education, and community for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) cyclists and to dismantle systemic racism so that EVERYONE can feel safe, free, and empowered to ride a bicycle.

“This is not just a publication you will want to read once. It’s a coffee-table worthy product to look back on for years to come, and a movement you can get behind,” said San Agustin.

Volume 6, in a new 7x10 format, is available Wednesday 02/15/2020 via www.brokenandcoastal.com.
