Helmetcam Film Festival Winning Films

The inaugural GoPro/Giro Helmetcam Film Festival at the Trips for Kids Vancouver’s annual Downbeat Fundraiser Event was an epic mix of mountain bike, surf and ski videos. A big thanks goes out to The North Face, GoPro, Giro, Pinkbike and the Georgia Straight for contributing to the success of this first time show. We will be building on this success and believe that this is a great concept to carry forward next year. Also a big thanks to Sterling Lorence for donating his slide show on his trip to Iceland for our audience.

The winning submission was “Kill Shots, Face Shots, Money Shots” by Lars Andrews. His video featured killer helmet and pole cam POV angles with some of the more epic deep pow and steep lines we’ve seen in a while. Lars takes home a new GoPro HD Helmet HERO camera for his winning video.

Second place went to Curtis Perrin for his “Pumptrack” video, a cool short film with good editing, fun-looking riding, and some creative angles. Curtis is the proud new owner of a Giro Remedy helmet for his film.

Huge thanks to those who submitted videos and everyone who came out to Downbeat to support Trips for Kids Vancouver. This year we raised in excess of $10,000 due in large part to your generosity. Overall the event was a huge success and makes us realize that we are fortunate to have the partnerships and support from local businesses, throughout the bike industry and from individuals who believe in Trips for Kids and what we are trying to do.

Thanks!

Pretty sure you said it had to be under 2 minutes long? and posted by the 24th of may?

Yet the winning submission is 2.36 mins long and posted 5 hours ago?

Plus the winning submission was done by the owner of a small ski resort in BC, which is why his footage is so good. is that fair?

and there were definitely better videos posted than the ones chosen, IMO

Firstly, let me congratulate TFK for the Downbeat and raising money for such a worthwhile cause. I give a lot to charity - both time and money - in the UK, so it's good to see events like this happening.

However, my 'goodwill' ends there, as the winning film isn't in the spirit or within the rules of the competition. As @OliScale says, the film is over the quoted max of 2 mins, does not contain bike-related footage (as we were urged to do), is from someone not on Pinkbike, and AFAIK, has not been on the Headcams section of PB, which is where all entries were to be placed. The video contains flash frames of naked women, atomic bombs and other unrelated content, which is hardly suitable! Ok, there's helmet cam footage in it, but it is not of a great quality and poorly shot and edited.

This comp may not have captured the PB community's imagination like previous comps, but there were many entries from around the world, including my own, which far exceeded the quality of the winning edit and were within the rules. At least the 2nd place edit was within the comp's remit, so if the judges decided this was worth 2nd place, they should give the goodies to the guy who made this at least!

I understand PB may not have had a deciding vote on this comp, but given that viewing of entries was hosted here, I feel it's very unfair to the PB community to allow a non-PB member to win. I and many other active PB members give and take crit about our own videos, photos and comp entries and regularly comment on each other's work, which helps to develop the community, but the attitude demonstrated here to comps and their judging is pretty saddening, considering the time and effort people have put in.

Maybe next time, we all won't bother...Oli

Thanks bud. Pinkbike have to know this as a similar thing happened with the LifeCycles recut comp. I work in a corporate environment too with investors, sponsors and other people with vested interests to keep happy, but if PB supports an event like this, the PB members who take time/effort to contribute, deserve some recognition...or at least a big pack of Pinkbike stickers. How can we compete with a video that was never uploaded and no one else but the organisers saw?

So the winning film was posted by TripsForKids 15 hours ago. There were definitely better vids, no disrespect to the winners and I really don't want to sound like a whiny bitch but this doesn't seem all the fair bending the rules. Oh well, well done winners

That decision is rediculous. I didnt spend a day filming and editing to get the vid to the right specs and length, for a random skiing vid on a bike website to win. Any of those other edits deserve the win alot more than either of these two easily. My Entry : www.pinkbike.com/video/197762
