Rider Sues Specialized, Claims Turbo Levo Motor ‘Defect’ Caused Him to Crash
In all seriousness, this a consequence of the American health care system and the litigious environment in the states. For reference, I work in the Canadian health care system. Last year was the first year that there were more mountain bikers admitted to our hospitals trauma unit than there were motorcycle accidents in the same year. It’s not uncommon to be admitted for a few day with chest trauma, rib fractures and maybe a chest tube. In Canada, this is free. In the states, the bills associated with an unplanned admission to hospital could be staggering. This individual likely does not want to sue his bike company. But, is now left with a financially devastating health care bill and HAS to sue in order to avoid financial ruin. The down stream effects for those of us who enjoy mountain sports is obvious. These types of lawsuits lead to trail restrictions, decreased access, municipal involvement and cost transfer to the consumer. Health care in Canada isn’t perfect, but at least we can send it without worrying about destroying your life over a few rib fractures.
