Bogus Basin Resort, located 18 miles northeast of downtown Boise, Idaho, hosted the fifth and final stop of the Idaho Enduro Series last weekend. Over 100 riders were out in full force on an absolutely beautiful day. The foliage was colorful, the sun was shining, and the temperatures were mild, making for a perfect fall day to be riding bikes with friends.
Riders finishing up after Stage 1 and catching their breath for the climb to the next run. Bogus Basin offers a wide variety of trails, highlighted by 'Around the Mountain' (ATM), rated as the best trail in Idaho by MTB Project. ATM wraps 360 degrees around Shafer Butte, which stands over 7,000 feet in elevation and serves as the main ski mountain during winter resort operations. The high-elevation, mountainous terrain, and lush forest is often a welcome relief from the stifling Boise heat in the peak of summer. ATM hosted two of the four segments and, according to racers, the stages were painful! Each contained punchy climbs that tested riders’ fitness and will.
Scott Fischer with the meanest look of the day as he rounded the 180-degree berm on Morning Star. The third stage was raced on Morningstar, the main downhill trail at Bogus. The trail winds down one of the ski runs near the main lodge and features rock sections, wood ladders, berms, and high-speed straightaways. This trail sees high traffic due to its easy access to loose corners and dusty sections were waiting to grab riders’ front tires and keep everyone on their toes. The fourth and final stage of the day was a ripper from the top of the mountain, snaking around the face and ending at the bottom lodge more than 10 minutes and 1700 vertical feet later.
The first stage on Around the Mountain provided some excellent views of the backside of Bogus Basin. Rider: Dylan FischerThis stage alone accounted for nearly half of total race time and by the look on riders’ faces, a majority of the pain! Spectators were able to watch racers rally the last few corners as they heckled each and every one of them. “PEDAL!”. It was the perfect ending to the day and the season.
It took a while for the sun and warmth to arrive before the start of the race. Miguel Sandoval on his way to an upgrade for next season. The Reed brothers battled for the Pro Men’s podium as they have been all season. Taylor Reed, a local from Boise, Idaho, pedaled his way to the top spot, winning both the Bogus Basin enduro and series overall. Megan Carley, another local from Boise, claimed the top spot of the pro women’s podium as well as the series overall.
