Grundig Downhill World Cup 1994
Philippe ParakisAs a downhill racer and product designer Perakis cooperation with protection gear company Dainese had huge impact on gravity mountainbiking. He did not only perform as a testimonial, he was more of a racing prototype lab. Dainese and he invested some time and brain to find confortable and fitting ways and for the eyes of the 90s cool looking protection. Other companies did for a long time not see the potential in the market of gravity MTB. Especially MX based brands failed to figure out the different fit bikers need then MXers. Most of the 90s Dainese pads had been the leader. For example look at the back protection they offered or the knee. And here in the pic I would guess they tried to work out ways for better collar bone protection, wich never went into production. Why was such effort possible? I guess because in Italy, they had a great and on rocky terrain riding community. And as a company working with GP road racing they had more knowledge and fits of protectors. But that is just a thesis.

Cap d Ail World Cup Downhill
Jake "Earthquake" WatsonJake Watson on its Marin FS Titanium with Rock Shox suspension. in 1994! While it is common to return and return the myth Shaun Palmer was the first that wear MX gear in Downhill, it is far from the truth. And even the clothing company Fox does not remember well what great athletes represented them before Naplam did. Well, the bias may be based on the impact on the finance of the company or the attention they had for the sport before. But in reality many more riders did wear MX kits before 1996. Companies sponsored riders. Oxbow from France vor example. Even I as a regional champ from East Germany had an MX clothing sponsor. By the way, MX was used as BMX gear too, so many had that kind of equipment. But riders used to be smart in the past too and some switched on aero sensitive tracks to lycra and on rocky terrain like Cap dAil to tougher textils. And to finish I would like to mention the most iconic Palmer picture from 1999, the one from his last Worlds, where he is on the floor after crashing in the last corner. Napalm wears lycra on that pic. So maybe downhill changed this one man.

Am Stötzer Gap unter der Autobahnabfahrt Kalk
Darren BerreclothWe had a photo session at a gap jump with some riders from Kanada. They visit Cologne and the MTB Rider Mag office. Darren chose to build in short time this wall ride without any proper tools. I like the passion he showed to find new photo spots. Thanks!
