Read the more about the Contour GPS inside:Contour (aka VHoldR) recently announced their latest creation - the
Contour GPS which is due to be released in mid October. The Contour GPS is similar to the Contour HD 1080p however it also has a built-in GPS that tracks position, speed and elevation. Other improvements over the Contour HD 1080p include the ability to take still photos, a lock for the rear hatch and a larger sliding start/stop switch to make operating the Contour camera even easier.
GPS TrackingThe Contour GPS helmet cam has a built-in GPS receiver that records your position multiple times per second in order to accurately record your location, speed and elevation. Using the Contour GPS Storyteller App, you can then watch you clips at the same time as you watch your journey as it is shown on Google Maps, along with a graph of your elevation and a read out of your speed. Check out the video below to see how it all works (if the player doesn't show, refresh your page):
Still PhotosAlong with recording high definition video, the Contour GPS can be used to take 5MP still photos as well. You can select between a shot every 1, 2, 5, 10, 30, or 60 seconds.
Locking Hatch and Bigger Sliding SwitchIn addition to the new features above, Contour have also made some welcome minor tweaks to the external design of the Contour GPS. The rear hatch will now come with a locking switch to ensure you don't accidently pop open the rear hatch when sliding the start/stop switch forward. The sliding start/stop switch which was already a great feature on the Contour HD 1080p has been further improved by being made slightly larger and more textured for the Contour GPS. This does mean that the Contour GPS will not fit the Contour Waterproof Housing, however Contour have already said that they are in the process of making a new waterproof housing for the Contour GPS.
SummaryOn paper the Contour GPS looks like it will be a great helmet cam, although it will be interesting to see how much power the GPS drains from the already limited battery life (about 2.5 hours for the Contour HD
1080p). The new still photo capability and the improved locking rear hatch are welcome additions, as is the larger starting/stopping switch. Check back for a full review of the Contour GPS when it is released in early/mid October (expect to pay around US$349)
