On day 3 of our Ecuador Mountain Biking trip we rode the Chota area from Ibarra at 2550m to 1600m. Starting at high Andean cordillera with typical Imbaburra forest we then drop down through desert. Fortunately it had just rained so the dirt and sand was about as tacky as it gets. The cacti were flowering and even usually sandy loose corners were in fine shape. We dropped just N of Salinas.

Volcán Pululahua-Pondoňa-La Luna-Infiernillo. Descended from 2815m to 1555m. Tons of biodiversity on the length of this ride. Lots of trenched trails (culuncos) due to rainstorms and wear of human feet over 100s of years. Natural pumptrack and hits of the La Luna section. Then immaculate, bougainvillaed lined singletrack on the Infernillio trail descending through equatorial jungle.

Ecuador Mountain Biking - Day 1 - Volcan Ilalo

Close to Quito the extinct Volcano Ilalo at 3194m divides the Tumbaco/Cumbaya Valley from the Los Chillos valley and was a strategic spot for the native Inga people. They mined obsidian, farmed and also used Ilalo as a 360 degree observation viewpoint. Now it is a pretty busy spot used by hikers, bikers and dirtbikers. We accessed from Tumbaco valley and rode down the Angamarca trails.
