Sep 3, 2023Spot AJAX with Belt Drive
$500 USD****THIS SALE IS ON HOLD*****
The bike is being restored. Most of the issues mentioned below will be addressed and the bike will be in like new condition.
2013 Spot Brand "The AJAX" bike for sale. The AJAX features a Gates Carbon Drive Center Track system with Gates Carbon Drive CDX belt and *Shimano Alfine 8 internally geared hub for lower maintenance and a surprisingly quiet ride. It has a more upright geometry to help with visibility when riding through traffic, and improved comfort.
I loved riding this bike around NYC, and beyond. Unfortunately I misplaced a critical part during deep maintenance of the Shimano Alfine hub and it no longer functions. The Shimano Alfine hub was showing signs of significant wear anyway. I re-assembled the hub as a placeholder, mainly so prospective buyers can view the bike. To make this bike go, you will need to replace the hub (Shimano part number SG-S501), or at least the hub assembly.
Some other details for your consideration:
-The frame is a 7005 aluminum size medium. It is a used bike, so there are scratches and may have a ding here or there.
-New rear Velocity DYAD 700C rim. I replaced the spokes too. You should be able to just lace up a new Shimano Alfine 8 hub or install a new hub assembly, should you go that route.
-It has the 22 tooth Gates Carbon Drive sprocket out back and the 42 tooth Gates Carbon Drive chainring and crank in the front, all in good, but used condition.
-The Gates Carbon Drive CDX belt is in good, but used condition. You should definitely do a belt adjustment after repairing the hub.
Speaking of which, 1 bolt was replaced on the swinging drop out. A 2nd never used replacement bolt will be included for the other side,
-This bike was spec'ed with a Shimano bottom bracket. I upgraded to the Shimano MTB version hoping it would be a little more water resistant and durable, but they usually only last a couple of years. The bottom bracket is currently in okay condition.
-Comes with the SPOT chain guard.
-Basic pedals are included.
-The Spec'ed WTB saddle is installed. The surface material is peeling, but the saddle is functional.
-Comes with Avid BB5 mechanical disc brakes. The rear brake pads are very worn, but a fresh set of brake pads will be included. These brakes were put back on for the sale of the bike, so I strongly recommend adjusting both front and rear brakes.
-After 8 years, the grips are good enough to use, but should be replaced. They will be left on as a placeholder since some people prefer certain grips and change them out regardless. However, I can include a fresh set of rubber push-on grips that are fairly comfortable and grippy.
-The headset hasn't given me any problems since day 1.
-The front wheel hasn't given me any problems since day 1, although this bike would look much much nicer with a color scheme similar to the current back wheel.
-The front fork is carbon fiber. There is some discoloration in the finish, but the fork appears to be in good condition.
-I needed the tires for my new bike, so tires are not included. The Ajax was spec'ed with 700x32C tires, but I was able to squeeze a set of 700x38C Schwalbe Marathon tires on the bike. I can add a set of WTB Teravail Washburn 700x38C tires and tubes for $100. They are a good mix
terrain tire
-For an extra $30 you can have a set of SKS Velo 42 fenders. They are easy to remove for pleasant riding weather and easy to put on for those stormy days. Note that they work well with the stock 700x32C tires, but were a very tight fit with the 700x38C Schwalbe Marathon tires.
