Cyclocross is a form of cycling that involves riders negotiating their bikes over pavement, wooded trails, grass, steep hills and obstacles. This sport can be demanding and punishing for both machine and rider. As a result bikes designed for the purpose of cyclocross need to be strong, light and durable. The obvious choice of material for this purpose is titanium. It is a lustrous transition metal with a silver color, low density and high strength. It is highly resistant to corrosionin sea water, aqua regia and chlorine. Bikes made from titanium are meant to stand the test of time. In the early 1980s Wisconsin native Kent Eriksen founded Moots Cycles from scratch in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Moots went on to become one of the most respected titanium frame builders in the industry after switching from steel in the early 1990s. Moots is a small company located in Steamboat Colorado that handcrafts their frames out of premium U.S. made titanium tubing. Each tube miter and each weld, in every single frame they build, is done by hand. Checked by hand, finished by hand and polished by hand. Only then do they apply the head badge, by hand of course. But Kent decided to switch gears in 2004. He left the company he founded five years after selling his share. Printed on these rims are words “La reine du nord” which translates to Queen of the North. These wheels go beyond the realm of just a standard training wheel. These are the wheelset inspired by myth and legend and are steeped in tradition. Paris Roubaix as affectionately referred to as l'enfer du Nord or the hell of the north. Not only is it hard on the riders it is even harder on their equipment. That is why to this day many pros fear leaving anything to chance and instead of embracing technology they embrace tradition. A wheel for Roubaix needs to deliver overall durability, lateral stiffness, and the ability to absorb impact. If you where to walk around the start line at Compiègne you would notice that the most commonly used wheelset is a 32 hole, 3 cross spoked wheel and a low profile boxed rim with a tubular tire glued to it.
