I would like to know if I could put the new 11speed m8000 rear derailleur and shifter on my bike but keep the 10-42 sram cassette? If yes, which chain do I have to use? Will it work as good as if I had a complete shimano or sram groupo?

By the way, it's not really for the 10t but because I'm not sure if I'll be buying new wheels and right now I have an xd driver. And for the XO1 black cassette too.... Shimano will lost a lot of sell just because of that! Frown

This will be interesting to know and if it will work vice versa, sram gx rear d and shifter with xt m8000 cassette and ultegra 11 speed chain. Anyone care to share their knowledge?

No problems running this set up, and you can go the other way (SRAM 11spd derailleur and Shimano 11spd cassette). As for the chain, any 11spd will do. And yes it will work as if you had a Shimano 11spd cassette, except you'll have a starting 10t cog instead of the 11 of the Shimano.

I'll change my X01 cassette for an XT as soon as mine is worn out.

Oh nice, thank you very much Ploutre! Smile

Yeah I kind of told myself I would put an xt cassette too, when time to change but I still don't know.... Double the price but all black and 10t.... well I'll think about it and see how rich or poor I am! haha Razz

I'm now used to the xx1 shifter but I hated it so much when I went from xt to them! Would love to be back on Shimano! Smile

I'm kind of having way too many issues with Shimano stuff to go back to them ... 2nd Saint derailleur I have to send back, 3 sets of m820 brakes, ... I'm tired :/

Wow! I thought Saint was really good...

Never had any badluck with my deore and xt stuff!

Youll want to run the same chain as the brand of cassette. Im running a sram xx1 cassette and shimano xtr derailleur with a race face narrow wide. A shimano 11 spd chain grinds slightly but noticeably on a xx1 cassette. A xx1 chain is meant to run with the sram cassette and the pulleys on the derailleur dont seem to mind. Its the better option. Not sure about running a shimano cassette with sram derailleur but id assume youd want to use a shimano chain.

Oh wow you're the first one to say that! Everybody always told me any 11speed chain will do... Thanks man, that's really good to know (I wouldn't have bought a Sram chain) and since you are riding that kind of setup, I can trust you! Wink

Can I ask you why are you running this setup? Smile

The gain ration between 10-42 and 11-40 is huge. and a 320 vs like 263% increase. Getting a huge difference in gearing with essentially a 3 tooth difference. Im running that setup because. I already had a wheelset with an xd driver and Ive always been a shimano over sram fan. the shifting is always cleaner and crisper, you have the ability to dump multiple gears at a time with one stroke of a shift lever, but you do have to change cable more often then sram due to a larger cable pull ratio.

Although supposedly shimano is coming out with an 11-42 cassette for their xt line that would fit on a regular freehub body... might making running sram stuff unneccesary.

Yeah m8000 xt has an 11-42 option. And yes, shimano shifters are really better than sram ones, that's why I want those! Smile

Thanks for your help!

Can you use a SRAM X01 11speed shifter with the XT M8000 rear mech and xt m8000 10-42 ????

No! Not the same ratio, at least if it hasn't change since a few years but I doubt!

No. The you need the same rear mech and shifter. The cable pull ratios are different.

11 speed detail are interchangabell, same ratio

Hi guys!
I enjoyed to read all your comments regarding the shimano - sram 11s compatibility.
I didn't see any note regarding the crank's offset and the compatibility of the sram/ shimano's chains to front chainrings.

is the shimano chain any good with the original sram rings up front and vise versa?

cheers!
Dor.
