KONAWORLD – The Kona Bicycle Company today announced that the proceeds from the 7th annual Kona Buck-A-Bowl Fun Raiser exceeded $11,000. The record take means that more Kona/IMBA freeride grants will be funded and more money will be available for each grant than last year.More than 500 people competed on teams representing IBDs, manufacturers, media and friends of the industry. The crew filled all 70 lanes at the fabulous Orleans Bowling Center, and the bar.

“Selling out 70 lanes for three years in a row is super exciting. It shows that we know how to put on a good party and when folks are given fun alternatives to support trail access will do so,” said Kona Kingpin and advocacy director, Mark Peterson. “This year we were wondering if the event was ready for a change. We threw out the idea to a few of our industry friends and were threatened with bodily injury so we figured we'd better keep it going.”

This year, the First Strike Challenge--sponsored by Dan&Jake--raised $1,200. The First Strike Challenge donates $100 for every strike thrown on the first bowl of the evening.

"The cash this event raised will directly support new places for freeriding," said IMBA's Pete Webber. "Once again, Kona and the bike industry have shown that bowling, partying and supporting IMBA is a recipe for success.”

Keeping true to the annual theme of “Bowl and Party”, event organizers completely forgot to get the final results. We do recall that the Orleans’ GM noting that the Kona Buck-A-Bowl Fun Raiser is the bar’s busiest night of the year.

The Kona/IMBA Freeride Grant program's goal is to speed the development of freeriding opportunities on public land. Grants can be used for a variety of purposes, including gaining land manager approval, addressing liability concerns, trail and stunt construction, trailhead kiosks and signage, and freeride organization building.

Stay tuned to the IMBA website for details on the 2005 Kona/IMBA Freeriding Grant application process, to be announced later this winter.
