Gee Atherton won the Crankworx Whistler Dual Slalom final tonight in a tough battle against Mitch Ropelato. In the first run they were side by side through the step up step down a little before the finish with Gee having just a slight lead but then Ropelato crashed in the berm right before the finish step down giving Gee the full 1.5 differential. In the second run Mitch came back strong with a solid win over Gee, but it wasn't enough to overcome the full 1.5 second lead that Gee had from run 1. In the small final it was rookie Troy Brosnan up against the experienced Mick Hannah and again it was a tough battle with Mick taking run 1 and Troy taking run 2. In the end Mick ended up third, Troy 4th.

On the women's side it was amazing to see slalom newcomer Micayla Gatto take on the likes of Jill Kintner and Melissa Buhl and come out on top. Womens semifinal run 1, Kintner vs Gatto. Gatto is right with Kintner in the early part of the race but then bobbles and Kintner takes the first run. Run 2 Micayla comes back strong and is right with Kintner into the last straight. Jill is slightly ahead with Gatto right behind her but she has problems with the last berm and Micayla moves into the lead, advancing into the final. Womens semifinal Buhl vs Ragot, Emmeline won both runs with what seemed like not too much difficulty. Women's small final Kintner vs Buhl, Kintner won both runs, then in the women's final Micayla Gatto won both runs against Emmeline.

Troy was having a killer day, I was blown away at how fast he was. IMO Gee was lucky to get to the Finals. 1st Fairclough had a mishap, then Lopes crashes & in the finals Ropelato goes down. That's the way the cookie crumbles but still hats off to Gee. Can't wait for Garbo DH & Canadian Open!

Gee is an animal!! world cup DH to crankworx DS. he is a machine

Tom-moT: Gee deserved that win in its entirety. the other racers made mistakes that cost them, whereas Gee was much more consistent and didnt crash.

exactly, that's what racing is, call it luck or call it what you want, but G won and that's all that matters in the end...

it's great when you read a race report and the first line tells you who won it, really saves time

When you see someone taking second with only rear brake and running clipless that makes you wonder what kind of competitive(less) "sport" DS is.
  • 1 0
wth is wrong with clipless pedals ??
  • 2 0
Japhex, both those things hint at it being MORE competitive.

Mitch ran his single speed dirt jump bike for the race...

Single speed, rear brake only, flat pedals and -- this part is really wicked -- semi-slick tires front and rear! For a young rider to buck convention like that speaks to a great deal of confidence. I wonder if the tires and brake set up cost him the crash...? A tire with a bit more cornering force up front might have kept him on the bike.
