Mammoth Bike Park now OPEN

Mammoth not only received more snow (a record breaking 55 feet) than any other mountain bike destination, it’s also higher. With a summit of 11,053’ even its base lodge towers over the summits of other parks. From now until July 4th, you can even ski and bike on the same day!

But all that snow hasn’t stopped the Bike Park crew from spending the last month plowing snow off of the trails, building framework and remodeling trails. Mother Nature has been helping out with temperatures in the 70s.

Now riders can start the summer with laps on Uptown, Downtown, Shotgun and Big Ring. Pedalers seeking a mellow cruise through the trees can head to Downtown and catch the shuttle back up. For those wanting to kick up dirt, head to Shotgun for some adrenaline pumping turns.

“Contrary to popular belief, the exceptional snow year will lead to an exceptional dirt year and we’re single-handedly bringing Sierra riders sick bike trails,” says Mark Hendrickson, Mammoth Bike Park Manager. “There are more new features and terrain in development this year than in the past five years combined.”

But is all that snow a blessing in disguise? “Mammoth riders talk about dirt the same way we talk about snow – and the dirt right now is epic,” says local mountain biker and Mammoth marketing hack, Steve Krcmar.

“In winter we like our skis fat to float on pow. Deep in the summer, we go with a wide tire, too. No need for that: the dirt is sticky and grippy,” added Krcmar.

Mammoth is stepping up to plate with capital improvements full of downhill possibilities. Additions include three new trails with irrigation to keep the dirt moist and tacky, a new jump run off Velocity with two dozen jumps and features in a row, an extension of Pipeline featuring a launch ramps constructed from wood and metal, a boardwalk and a wood wallride, a major facelift on Trail Home resulting in 1.5+ miles of jumps, berms and freeride-specific features, two new over/under bridges in high traffic trail intersections, a new fleet of rental and demo bikes from Rocky Mountain Bicycles and an all new skill development center dubbed the Bike Lab to help build confidence before tackling on bigger features.

With fistfuls of improvement, mountain bikers who ride Mammoth have an epic summer ahead. Because as Mae West quipped, “Too much of a good thing can be wonderful.”

Went there is weekend. With only Shotgun open, it was crowded and tough to get a good flow going as you alway ran into the back of someone. I love Mammoth, but wait a few weeks before slapping down your money for a pass. It definitely wasn't worth the $29 this weekend.

I was just talking to some people yesterday about Mammoth and it's pumice trail system... Tell me more about how these trails are going to be tacky by adding water? Don't get me wrong, I love Mammoth for snowboarding and downhilling, but I don't get it.

Kamikaze all day!

Uptown, Downtown, Shotgun and Big Ring. So there is really only one fun trail right now. Twilight Zone is still under a ton of snow. I doubt Skidmarks will even be open this year.

i was talking to a friend that knows one of the head honchos for mammoth and they said they were saying skidmarks will probally be open by july 4th. yea it sounds far fetched. they also said that off the top will be open, and some lower gondola stuff. not sure how there gonna make it happen but well see

There is no way that skids will be open by July 4. I went mid July last year and skids wasn't open yet. Maybe they have one of those Nascar jet dryers! hah I sort of believe of the top might be open just because it gets more sun.

ya dude i live in mammoth and there is no way skids will open, way to much snow. when the park crew says the top will be open by july 4th, they are talking about "off the top", a south facing beginner trail.im not sure about the trails on the lower gondola but im hopeful!

Went last year , place was terrible. They said they were adding a bunch of stuff maybe that will improve. It's a huge mountain but features are far and few between.

I agree, I went last year and was not impressed. For an 8+ hour drive I would rather go the extra 4 hours and spend my weekend in Whistler. It was a great environment but the trails were so so.
