Aug 5, 2011
by Cut Media
With the World Cup circuit rolling into La Bresse in France this weekend it means it's time to hook up with Team Chain Reaction Cycles/Nukeproof Mechanic Dave Garland for another tech feature. This time Dave talks you through how to properly setup the chain tension of your Downhill Bike.

how about showing the bike more than his face? i like how he describes it...but it would be nice to see it instead of his face...

I was just thinking exactly this. Not too useful when he's trying to describe and point out something.

Agreed totally. Don't know what the cameraguy was thinking, but...

I was gonna ask if Fran Drescher's midget cameraman from UHF shot this footage. What's with the up the nose angle? Smile Other than that, good info.

totally agree on that one. i never knew that the chain's length can adversely affect the rear suspension's travel in the first place.

That was an awesome video. Thank you. I seriously never would've thought about taking the spring out of my rear shock to do that.

Once I tried to take the spring off my bike, but I failed... I was a bit afraid of damaging the shox, it was a DHX 5.0. Now I have a VAN R/C, is it easy to take the spring out?

If it's the same as my Van R all you have to do is,

back the preload collar off
the coil should now be free to move up and down
slide the bump-stop thing up the shaft
slip the round disc out (dont know the technical name)
and then the spring should slide right out

Here's a previous Tech Tuesday using a Vivid, but it's the same principles....

Hope that's of some help bud Smile

why did you down grade to a Van R/C? they have near to no tune ability, and the DHX5 ann you have to do it loosen the spring by the screw and the bottom comes and you slide it off and then slide the spring off
  • 2 0
Yeah, too much of his face while he is trying to show you something...shame.

How would you do this with a Vivid Air? Remove the shock entirely? Bleed all the air out (really don't want to do this)?
  • 3 0
Why not? Just let all the air out of the chamber... it will be even easier than a coil shock. Just pencil down your pressure, let air out, check your setup, then pump back up to your recorded pressure.
