Tomac Is Back...Racing!

Feb 25, 2008
by Jordan Holmes
Tomac recently announced the creation of the Tomac Factory Racing Team. Based in Switzerland, the team will contest the entire 2008 World Cup DH/4X program.

“A dream come true” says Team Manager and World Cup rider Claudio Caluori. “It’s where I started my career nine years ago, and I am really happy to now be managing the team and riding Tomac for 2008.”The team will feature some of the hottest up and coming talents from around the globe. On the DH side, team riders include Rhys Willemse and Laurie Dinham from Australia, Joseph Smith from the UK and Robin Hagen from Switzerland. All have been hailed as the "fastest juniors" in their respective countries. In 4X, the duo of Mirco and Adrian Weiss promises to round out an already strong package of junior riders.

Under the tutuledge of Caluori, who will continue to race the Elite World Cup circuit, the team will be focused on all of the World Cup events and the World Championships. Additionally, the team will hold Junior Development Camps in Switzerland, where young riders will have the chance to ride with the pros and benefit from their riding knowledge and skills.

“It was really an obvious choice to work with Claudio,“says Tomac owner Joel Smith.“His experience, knowledge and work ethic will be an incredible benefit for these young riders.“

Sponsors include Fiat, TSG, Shimano, FSA, Fox, E13, Kenda, DT Swiss.

Claudio Caluori
Claudio Caluori is a World Cup racer with 7 National Titles and 15 years of racing experience, 3 years of which for the first Tomac Racing Team. Claudio is extremely happy to get the chance of doing what John Tomac did for him 9 years ago: supporting young riders, helping them to attack at a World Cup level!

Laurie Dinham
Laurie Dinham is a 17 year old Australian. He placed 2nd in the Australian National Championships U17s category and 3rd U15s, and is State Champion U19s, U17s & U15s. His goal is to become a successful World Cup racer.

Robin Hagen
Robin Hagen is the 17-year-old hope from Switzerland. He wants to become the next Swiss rider (after Claudio) to finish in the top ten in a World Cup.

Joseph Smith
Joseph Smith was the fastest junior at the World Championships in Fort William, Scotland who will still be a junior in 2008. At an age of 18, his goal is to prove himself in the Elite category.

Rhys Willemse
Rhys Willemse has already shown his skills at the Australian National Series, when he scared many of the pros with his fast times and smooth riding style. Only 17 years old, 2008 will be his first World Cup season.

Adrian and Mirco Weiss
Adrian and Mirco Weiss are two young 4X talents from Switzerland. With their consistent top 5 results at Swiss Nationals, they’re ready to step it up at the World Cup.

Ha! capncrunk, your post is funny. If there was a huge influx of American DH racing juniors that were killing it right now on the circuit (J.D. is doing well, I know, I'm talking about an Aussie level influx), I'm sure the good people at the Tomac bicycle company would be eager to sign them. However, the fastest riders in the world right now are from the other side of the planet, and the companies that make bikes want to associate themselves with those riders. In order to... WHAT? Sell more bikes? That's crazy!
Keep in mind, the name "Tomac" is now a brand name, not a dude's name. There's more at stake than what Johnny T wants to do with the state of American DH racing.
That being said: go Steve Smith, go! Steve Smith '08, baby!

Dead on! America has talent, just not Junior level. Some old timers still rip but who wants to back them you know! We don't have a following like over there.

Hey, The USA has some really talented riders that are getting no love from companies in the US. Maybe Tomac need to move from Durango Colorado since it's in the US and go live in Europe. Tired of hearing all the talent is else were when American riders have to do it on their own.

Suck it up princess. The rest of the world is out there making it happen. Ben Reid started his own team and the antipodes have been laying down their own hard-earned for years.

Rhys Willemse finished 9th in the world champs. That's excellent and what a great way to sell Tomac bikes. That track in Italy was harsh on all the bikes. Its one of the toughest courses I've seen. The Tomacs kicked some butt! I think its great that an American company is sponsoring riders from England and Australia. These young tomac riders have a good following at home and this has helped to sell Tomac Bikes overseas.

why are all these tomac fans suddenly re appearing now? Seems like too many people bounced out and started dissing tomac when the company was going to go caput.

Where's the love for American talent Tomac?!? I would think that he would focus on bringing the States back to their dominant standings of when he raced himself. Boo I say, boo!

I've heard there are a few smaller teams that will also be on the Tomac brand bikes, so expect them to be in the USA and Canada.

yeah dude, I also rode with this kid named Sully and man does he shred. I would compare him to a demon flying out of hell on a bike but that might not really give you a good comparison of his riding ability.
