I have not done it my self but Magic shine sells very powerful lights dirrect from China. For 30$!!!!
I got my 500 lumen lite from MEC for 50$
Good lites are coming down in price.

 My problem is that most of those "super powerful" lights using many LEDs are "wasting" too much power on periphery. The hotbeam is too spread. The result is that I prefer the cheapest Magicshine 808 with 900lm over 1600lm MJ872 because it lits further and harder. Sure broad stuff is cool when you are not sure what is coming under your front wheel, but it is way worse to not be able to see stuff until it's too close when riding fast enough.

 So you are way ahead of me in having afordable yet bright lighting. My 250 lumen light throws a very tight circle perhaps 60 cm in diameter at about 10 meters. Perfect for scanning the trail ahead of me. The 500 lumen makes a flood about 2 meters in diameter.

 500 lumens. gets the job done. 250 lumen spot lite on the helmet finishes the job. It was pissing out and nice and gooey!
