The two Matthews brothers, Peter and Stephen are both in Whistler, riding on some of the raddest equipment on the market and generally having the time of their lives.

Stephen Matthews says:I was dreaming about living in this place literally everyday I wasn't here. I knew it's where I wanted to be, I just had to make it happen. After I moved away from Whistler the first time, I found myself dreaming of countless bike park laps, relaxing at the lake, and discovering new trails a daily occurrence. I've managed to come back here for 3 months after completing University, and so far the 2 months of riding everyday has been fantastic! I am envious of my brothers permanent Whistler address, but we've taken different approaches on the 2010 season. This August I'm off to Switzerland to guide with Joe Schwartz and Wade Simmons of
Big Mountain Bike Adventures, which pretty much confirms my dream summer, a reality!
I've dabbled in some racing this season including some of the BC Cup races like Nanaimo, North Shore Bike Fest, and Arduum. It's cool seeing the coastal riders kill it on their home tracks, there's some serious talent out here! I took 9th in Pro Men at the Fluidride Cup - Whistler, an exciting finish in an American race circuit. The scene here has an unreal vibe about it, as anyone who's spent time here can attest to. The whole town has a fun environment, but is oddly competitive with local pride and status...it's fantastic!
I've been working as a mechanic for Calgary Cycle, a high-end mountain bike shop back home in Alberta, and I was presented with the opportunity to spread the word on the
Online Store. I can describe Calgary Cycle Online as insane deals from a company that knows quality products. My favorite part of working with Calgary Cycle and Calgarycycleonline.com, is the fact that they only sell what they believe in.
Calgary Cycle Online has been super helpful with supporting Peter and I this season, they are the ones to thank for our ability to ride the park daily using the sickest equipment on the market. We've been set up on
Knolly Podium's for the season, and are both super stoked! The bikes are long and low, making them feel faster and more stable than any bike I've ridden before! With help from Calgary Cycle, NRG Enterprises, Chromag Bikes, Dakine, and Troy Lee Designs, we've been able to have a fantastic May and June in the Sea to Sky corridor!
Peter Matthews says:When Stephen moved here two years ago for the summer, I was stoked. He and I had both been coming here for a couple weeks each summer for the last few years and one of us had finally made the move. At that point I was in Calgary working at Canada Olympic Park, waiting for my two weeks a year where I would be able to ride the Whistler Bike Park.
A few years have gone by and I am now the Whistler bum of the family, working Bike Park Trail Crew in the summer and Snowmaking in the winter. Working within the park has been a dream of mine since the first time I rode it in 2004. Now, in my second season with the Trail Crew I am starting to feel at home here and that the sacrifices were all worth while. This year I have been given the task of designing the Dual Slalom, which in years past has been one of the most unique events at Crankworx. I have some big shoes to fill, but over the last few weeks we have started building the course and it’s all coming together.
I don’t ride the BC Cups like Stephen, but I do partake in the Phat Wednesdays Series every week. It’s only a local race series, but the competition is stiff and racing local trails against your friends is pretty awesome. The two dollar beer, draw prizes, and party that follows isn’t bad either...
The ability to ride some of the sickest equipment around this season has been a true treat. I was a bit apprehensive about riding a bike in its first production year, but after one run in Pemberton, I was sold. The Podium is a fast, responsive, true downhill/freeride sled, and it was very easy to make the transfer to from my old Cove Shocker. The fancy Chromag bits make any bike look flashy, and having the headquarters just down the road from my place isn’t bad either. Dakine and Troy Lee Designs are always at the forefront of lookin’ good, so wearing their stuff is definitely a safe bet.
