Pioneer Scott Syncros - Team Introduction

Pioneer Scott Syncros. Team warm up day 2014

It’s fair to say that ‘Enduro’ in all its forms has well and truly arrived in the UK. This new form of all-mountain, stage racing has gone from conception to having multiple, fully-formed race series’ almost overnight. Make what you want of the ‘Enduro’ tag but it’s quickly becoming the perfect evolution of mountain bike racing in a country that has an endless supply of trails and riders but lack of outright altitude.

It’s testament to the rapidly growing popularity of the sport that a company like Scott have decided to put their weight behind a dedicated team of up and coming Enduro riders. With factory support, heavy-duty sponsors, a sick bike and some serious skills they are aiming to both legitimise and dominate Enduro racing in the UK.

Scott UK is based in the northeast of England. Famous for little more than its bleak and rugged wilderness we have the kind of trails and conditions that builds resilient riders. It was on one such day in typical northern conditions that the new team met up for the first time at Hamsterley Forest, just a few days after both Helen and Lee won the elite categories on their first outing with new Genius LT.

The new team is officially titled Pioneer-Scott-Syncros and I’d like to introduce them.

LEE KERMODE

This north Yorkshire MX rider started competing in the Gravity Enduro Series in 2013 and it’s fair to say he made a big impression. Winning every round in the Masters’ category with times that would be bothering the Elites, Lee was awarded a trophy for ‘oustanding acheivment’ by Steve Parr the series organiser in recognition of his perfect season.

HELEN GASKELL

Helen has been a permanent fixture in UK mountain biking for well over a decade. This is Helen’s third year riding a Scott and she is no stranger to the top step of the podium. As well as competing anywhere and everywhere Helen runs her own coaching company making her both an experienced competitor and a valuable ambassador.

CAL DEW

2013 was also Cal’s first year of Enduro racing. He describes it as a learning curve with a few highlights. His personal favourite was finishing a very respectable 39th at the Megavalanche. Cal is fast, keen and can’t stop smiling.

THE BIKE- GENIUS LT 700 TUNED
Pioneer Scott Syncros. Team warm up day 2014

Fully carbon frame. Custom tuned Fox suspension. Three way adjustable traction control. And just look at it! I'm a sucker for anything flat black, but with a frame that weighs 2450g and 27.5 wheels the Genius is as light and fast as it looks.

DAMON MANNING
An honourable mention here for the new team mechanic. Spannering at all Gravity Enduros and keeping everything running sweet.

Pioneer Scott Syncros. Team warm up day 2014

On a typically damp and grimy weekday at a classic northern trail centre the team was itching to get kitted up and show what they could do. There's something about shiny, new kit that stokes the enthusiasm and the pace was rapid.

By the time you read this the team will be on their way to Ae Forest for round 1 of the Gravity Enduro and from the look of it, you won't be able to miss them. Don't be surprised if they go home with a lot of points. You can follow their progress using the tag #scott2luvit

Good luck for the team and all of there competitors in 2014. This year is going to be massive.

Its great having new teams based up here in the NE but its not a great advertisement for your brand when you read items like this mtbguisborough.ning.com/m/discussion?id=3084102%3ATopic%3A160431

Ouch, massive PR fail. Shame really as most pro riders I have come across seem to be ok - shame that this lot seem to have let their egos get in the way of basic trail etiquette.

I wonder if Tom Harrison, the writer, might respond? Who knows!

saw this on another forum and although it sounds pretty bad we shouldnt take a couple of posts on the internet as 100% accurate. Could just be the guy had an OTB and wanted someone to blame

This has been dealt with. It's a shame that people keep posting that link all over the place. It's one man on a mission to ruin a good day out for the team. All I'll say is "we shouldnt take a couple of posts on the internet as 100% accurate", nail on the head mate.

Its not one man out to ruin a good day out for the team. The team was pushing up the trail, GET OFF THE TRACK IF PUSHING UP!

Has it actually been dealt with? If it is even a little true I think "It's one man on a mission to ruin a good day out for the team" is a little ironic... But hey, I wasn't there.

Doesn't sound like the worst situation in the world TBH. To be fair to the Scott team, the guy ranting doesn't complain about the Scott rider's attitudes or anything they said so it sounds as though the Scott guys were probably pretty reasonable about the whole thing while the ranting guy wanted to swear at people for breaking his flow. It is really hard to do a shoot without getting in someone's way for a short section and the guy riding could have just slowed down, had a chat and some banter, then carried on. He seemed most bummed about having a full run interrupted rather than them causing any real danger. The guy ranting didn't ride to what was in front of him and took a small spill. It would be annoying to have the flow broken up down a trail for people pushing up on a shoot like this but it's a fairly normal occurrence elsewhere. Just slow down, have a chat and you never know, you might even get some tips or swag. No idea what actually happened but just a few thoughts having come across shoots elsewhere with other teams and magazines.

Nothing wrong with pushing up the track if you're courteous and vigilant. Keep your eyes far up the track at all times and when a rider, who to be fair does have the right of way, comes into view then get the f**k off the track.

As already mentioned you can read comments from other riders from that day on the Hamsterley Riders facebook page. Here is the link.

My fave comment has to be "Makes a change to it being Helen Gaskell blocking the trails"

how has it been dealt with?
  • 4 1
Hi, not sure this jow this has been dealt with, as only response I got was a emaol saying that the people you seen on the day in question were happy, I responded saying this does not explain your reason for pushing up trails on more then one occasion, this is not a one man mission to spoil your day as at first I thought it was a demmo day and had no idea it was professional riders until I got to transmission, I did not spoil your day, your team spoilt my day and other members of the public who also have a right to ride down a trail once tjey have gone the correct way ip a trail, sorry if you or others can't except this. But both you and me and the Scott staff of that day know that use were in the wrong not me, and on said day unless use are hard of hearing must of heard other members using bad language when they also had to stop for use to push up the wrong way. Man up and admit use were wrong. I have still not had any response from the many emails I have sent. I have no intention of giving Scott a bad name.

Sorry for spelling mistakes, used my phone to respond

There were multiple people that day that said the same thing, not just that one person. Check out the Hamsterley Riders Facebook page and quite a few piped up and said it happened to them too, it just took one man to mention it. Bit of a shame as the bike looks genuinely awesome and shouldn't get bad PR.

That helmet, them goggles....they definitely enduro!
  • 3 0
Them socks are the most enduro sock ive ever seen, and the colour is enduro black
  • 2 1
Goggles with non-full face helmets are always comedy, but those humongous orange things remind me of something like a href="http://www.heavencostumes.com.au//media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/250x250/e0212f0db981c12c132a5c854ea0ee08/s/m/smf-6155-giant-clown-glasses-in-tan-700.jpg" rel="nofollow"> these /a>/div>.

Love going to Hamsterley as it is only about 15 mins from me however not good to see comments like the above. No matter what level of rider you are the trails are for everyone. No VIP privileges.

I've had coaching with Helen Gaskill she's a fantastic coach and a really nice girl. Did we block trails on the coaching day... absolutely not. The shoot was taking place on one small section of trail even if they did get in the way there's a whole forest to ride!!! Just read the posts on Hamsterley riders petty little middle aged men with nothing better to do than complain. They do believe because they do a dig day once in a blue moon that they have contributed massively and do in fact have more rights than anybody else. These are the same people that are rude to my wife riding slowly on a weekly basis. Take the negative comments about the Scott team with a pinch of salt made by petty, whingy men with nothing better to whinge about on a crappy forum.

they look ridiculous in those googles

99.9% of people have pushed back up a trail at somepoint whether it be to do a drop/jump or to get a picture or to get some go pro footage or just to enjoy part of the trail again.THIS WAS A PRO SHOOT i can understand people moaning if it was some kids with a go pro charging up flat bang in the middle of the track but for a company like scott and pro riders and a pro photographer to come to hamsterley to do an article which has been published on pink bike just shows the world how good a place hamsterley is and puts it on the map. if i saw these guys on the track i would of respected why they were there and done my best to avoid them or wait till they had got the shots they needed and then peddled past when safe to do so. this is a great article with great pics just a shame its been spoiled by silly comments, no one got hurt no one got injured. respect to scott and the riders and to tom.

Bullshit. They have no more right to be there blocking the trails than anyone else. Pro team or not is irrelevant, the trails are for all not just those paid to wear ridiculous goggles. Its a basic lack of respect for anyone else using the trails that day...bear in mind they will have mostly paid for travel and parking to be there in the first place from their own pocket.

they were pushing up the track wow big deal can count numerous occassions ive seen people filming or walking up the track on the downhill course its part and parcel of riding whether it be people with go pro's or pro film makers. what they should of done is gave you something to twist about properly and got in touch with the foresty commission and closed the track off altogether for the whole day. stopped you's all from riding it. i dont know tom i dont know the riders but what a bunch of twisty miserable gets you's are. all this over someone taking pics at hamsterley. what are you's trying to achieve by it all? messaging scott direct plastering stuff all over their facebook page and twitter like a bunch of bent trolls. im sure the riders are savvy enough to look up the track and see if someone is coming, cant imagine they stand flat bang in the middle of the track. i wasnt there i might be wrong but you's are making a mountain out of a molehill. i hope more people and pro riders and camera men come and show hamsterley off for its true colours and the great place it is not the way its been shown at the minute a place where loads of miserable twisty moany troll riders ride their bike. what are people going to think from around the world when they read this thread. to the forestry commission and to the trailbuilders and to descend hamsterley well done for the great work you's do and anyone reading this thread if you've never been to hamsterley get yourself there its a great place.

Interesting to see an audio company sponsoring an enduro team... It would be interesting to find out what the rationale behind that was?
  • 1 0
Just because they don't make biking related products doesn't mean they can't support a sporting team... Just look at the tour de France.... Team Sky etc.. Or formula 1 with Santander or Vodafone etc... Sometimes sponsors provide parts and others just provide money
