OK, so I'm going to dump my Juicy 5 and go back to V's.

Can people recommend decent lever / cable / brake / brake-pad combos?

Why are you ditching the disc?

Strangely enough it has too much stopping power and locks up the rear very easily. On trails it makes the back skid alot.

Also want to start riding a bit more park when our new one is finished this summer, and discs are a little delicate to brake easily.

try to get your hand on some LX or XT v-brakes(they are the same) those are the best vee I've ever had...
avid makes some great levers(loads of adjustement and strong IMO)

How about the Avid Single Digit 5 or 7's?

Avid arch rivals with avid dial levers, kool stop dual compound pads. Its an amazing setup best setup ive ever used for v brakes.

Odyssey Linear Slic Cable

trust you cant beat an xtr lever. mines like new and ive had it 2 years

and aparently shimano brakes are noisy.. wat i heard thats why i got the avid

Is the noise not down to the pads and not the brake arms?

never had or tried the xtr lever so I can't say anything on that, probably just as good as the best avid lever...
Shimano brakes are not noisy at all. if you got shitty pads then like any other Vee they will be noisy...

V-brake set would depend on how much you would like to spend.
The best set that I have ever run is the Paul CrossTop with the Paul love lever.

Odyssey Monolever (medium)

running an Odyssey bmx brake lever on a mountain bike v-brake doesn't work very well, as the Odyssey lever's "cable throw" is designed for a BMX brake (e.g. Dia Compe Hombre / 990 / Fly) which requires substantially less leverage to operate than any mountain bike V-brake

modulation gets all screwed up when running BMX and MTB brake parts together...

the best v-brake levers are Shimano XTR or Avid (with adjustable pad contact), the Avid FR-5 is dirt cheap (about £15 pair) and works great

by using a mountain bike specific lever, you will get proper modulation and the ability to lock-up your brake when required
