I think the top freeriders are the ones making bank; relative to DH racers.

I know this is about DH racers, but still. thats why cedric makes (or atleast MADE back when he was with cannondale) so much more than anyone else, he is sort of the best of both worlds. He has done very well in the freeride scene and the DH scene.

people have said about the athertons being on 200k a year, i highly doubt its from commencal! think about the atherton family: on top gear, sponsored by RED BULL, and OAKLEY, and ANIMAL, and NISSAN, all global, multinational corperations! yea they might get payed that much, but all spread out between their sponsors. the energy drink companies pay alot of money for athlete endorsements! because at the end of the day thats how they sell product! which all tastes relatively similar, and costs 2 p to produce a can of red bull, and they sell for like £1.60 for a 150ml can! the rest is profit: which in turn goes into advertising, and product endorsemnt and sponsorship! other wise no-one would buy it!

red bull has enough money to fund a BILLION dollar formula one setup....

Would be interesting to find out how much they make.
It's a shame that it's most likely very very little

They lead very comfortable lifestyles doing something they love.

Save your shame for a worthy cause.

But they don't get paid a lot. They get paid enough to live off, and to pay for the expenses of travelling acorss the world riding bikes. They don't have enough to purely live off. Most have bike shops, other means of earning money outside Mountain bikes, I know that Minnaar has his own bikeshop, CG has a bar, bikeshop etc, they do a lot of coursebuilding, movies, photoshoots that bring in extra cash.

"Gregs" bike shop is actually his parents shop, they owned it before he started riding mtb. They just "using" his name. The top guys get quite a bit though as far as i can work out.

i would imagine that the likes of steve peat get a fair bit. his house on various films/magazones etc seems to be relatively big so who knows.

I read in a magazine, can't remember which one, but it had an interview with Gracia. Anyways, it said that when he first signed to Cannondale it was for 150,000 euro. And apparently Peat's contract with Santa Cruz is $1M for 3 years.

What i've heard from some sources in belgium :

Syndicate team-members get 200.000$ / year , this is without extra's from Sponsership.

But like i said at the beginning : " this is what goes around here in our small , flat country "

LISTEN you cant justify the pay for work, if they like what they do then it is no job the pay would then be a bonus.

O+

Sponsors don't pay you to race, they pay you to sell their product.
They pay a salary of whatever amount, then you get all of your winnings.
Then every magazine you appear in you get a bonus.
Podium finish =bonus.

sidney crosby is a good example, his salary from the penguins is penneys compared to what he gets payed by gaterad, rebook, bell(WTF), and every freaking cereal company.

friend of mine knows greg really well as he used to live next doors to his sister,
he told me that greg already has enough money to retire and live flat out till he dies.

A friend of a friend of a friend of a friend who knows someone who's heard...

Yes I'm sure he gets decent money being a consistent top 5'er but you have to also consider that he lives in South Africa, the currency of which is much less valuable than the Pound or Dollar. So whatever he earns gets multiplied by a considerable amount, and the cost of Living in SA is relatively cheap. Petermatitzburg is also far from prime location, so you can live in a big house and seem wealthy Wink

Bottom line is that biking is a hobby not a career. Stay in school.

well when you think about it most of the the top wc riders have a sponsership from a clothing company of some kind, their team will pay for their travelling and bikes/bike parts and training equipment, so even if they only had to pay rent/food bills then they could easily live off like £15k a year, and with prize purses and stuff getting bigger and alot of the dh riders crossing over into freeride events now then i reckon most of the top 50 riders make a fairly decent living off of Dh racing.

but as Glas4d just said, most of us aint gonna make it big so hold down a proper job Wink and race in your spare time and if you make some money from winning then fair play.
