Killing wasp nests, any ideas?

So far I've found 2 wasp nests on our rather small hill, preventing us from expanding our trails in either direction. I only know the general area of the nests so fire isn't really an option.
I need some reasonable eco friendly and serious suggestions, thanks.

Problem is, it's in an area we've not started work on yet, joining onto the original trail, so we need to persuade the wasps to leave/ kill them before we can build the trail. I've thought about leaving a trail of sugar or something into a small pool of someting sticky or toxic...

I've thought about spray, but I don't want to be coating a largish area of the land in it hoping to catch the wasps, seems kinda irresponsible.

Thanks for your suggestion, but its a ''yellow-jacket'' wasp nest that I think is in a rotted log, so it is probably underground.

roll over the log then run fast. then come back with a wheelbarrow of mud and cover the hole if there is one

I think I did move their log, they didn't seem too happy. Other downside is we don't have a lot of tools up there, i.e, a rusty spade head and a broken folding-spade...

If the nest is small (size of your fist or smaller), a blow torch works best. If its bigger, use smoke bombs, it will kill them all if the nest gets a good whiff of smoke.
