1x11 vs 1x10?

So I'm looking to upgrade to 1xsomthing and am having a hard time deciding. On one side I could go 1x11 but my hub is a Shimano and cannot use the SRAM cassettes. I can buy a Shimano cassette and it will work fine. This will cost my abt 500 bucks. I could do that or just buy a new hub and then relace it to the new hub which would work as well. On the other side, I could go 1x10 and just get a new chainring and cranks. Possibly a new rear derailleur as well, one with a clutch. that would only run me abt $250. What are the real main differences between 1x11 and 1x10? Do I really need 1x11? Just for 1 extra gear? I'm mostly a train rider and may also take up downhill. However, there are some pretty steep climbs at my local. Thanks for all the help!

To evaluate whether or not you think you need an 11spd or can get away with a 10spd, you'll need to use a gear ratio calculator. Google it, there are plenty. You'll input your current drivetrain configuration and it will calculate a bunch of numbers or ratios. Think about when you are riding and which gears you spend most of your time in. Take special note of these ratios. Then enter in your 10spd and 11spd configurations and compare those ratios with your current ones. Change the chainring size to get your most used ratios to where you want them on the cassette. Then check your climbing ratios (largest cogs) to see if you can handle that climbing difficulty. You should be able to determine whether a 10spd or an 11spd is best for your riding after doing that.

You won't need new cranks. You can build a 1 x 10 fraction of the cost and have almost the same range but with less clicks. Until 1x11 drops to the same price as 1x10 and expander cog it's not worth it. People might argue about percentage this and that but a 1x10 with 11_40 Is all you will need. If that is not enough stick to 2x10 until your legs can handle it

O+

1x11 already IS similar price to 1x10 + expander.
New XT group (not counting the cranks) costs around 220 euros. 10 spd XT group with oneUp expander costs around 200 euros.

If you already have 10 spd transmission, it makes sense just to upgrade it to 1x10. But if you're buying whole new group, I see no reason not to buy 11spd Shimano XT or SRAM GXP

Well i wouls buy new cranks and a chainring if i would so 1x10 both used so it makes it cheaper

For my new build I'm not going to be using 1x11. I find that 1x10 gives me more than enough range of gears and excellant performance for far less of the cost.
Also you have to factor in that 1x11 sp chains and cassettes will wear faster due to the fact they are that small bit thinner than a 10sp chain.
I wouldn't be too fussed over 1 gear. If you really want something to help on the climbs consider a different chainring or a42tooth expander sprocket.
Just my thoughts

I'd go with whatever you can get a good deal on. The differences between 11 and 10 speed are (not surprisingly) small. SRAM's 11 speed will give you a slightly higher highest gear ratio since they offer a 10 tooth smallest cog vs. Shimano's 11 tooth smallest cog.

ok i will go with 1x10 thanks guy. And if i want to updrage all i need to get is a cassette, derailleur abd chain

i think it would be wise to leave your rear derailleur and cassette alone and just buy a $25 chainring to see if you even like it. It's really a inexpensive and easy switch. You may find its all you really need.

Just go 1 x 10. I just finished the conversion today. 32 oval Chai ring,11-42 cassette shimano xt clutch derailleur and slx 10 speed shifter , if you go 40-42 you will need goat link. Chain length 116. Got a sun race cassette off ebay 70 bux, new take off xt derailleur and slx shifter again new take off 61.00 ,gold kmc chain 35.00 new shift cable 20.00. Ridi g on my street works flawless. Very smooth and good range of gearing so conversion only cost me 186.00. Well worth the cost. Also when do you really use the 11, 12 ,13 on a mountain bike. I can honestly say I stay mostly in the middle and a few high for climbing. And going g to an 11 speed and getting a 10 cog you will never use or need. You will love the 10 speed.

+1 for a SunRace 11-42 cassette. Instead of the goatlink/rad cage stuff you could get a 11 speed XT rear mech for almost the same price of those and as the pull ratio is the same and it will work with 10 speed shifter

The 10 & 11 speed pull ratios are different Bosnianrider, well according to this article they are anyway.

The 11 speed pull ratio was a calculation on their part in an old blog post. I haven't tried it myself but others did it with success (check out the video):
