Hey guys, I'm looking at purchasing a fox 36 180mms purely for FR and the benefit of descent I know the fox 36 float runs similar technology to the fox 40, but what's the difference between the float and talas? If it's something insignificant like a climbing platform I really don't care and will probably buy the talas over the float, any information would be much appreciated, many thanks guys

TALAS: Travel Adjust Linear Air Spring
A TALAS fork has two positions of travel that can be adjusted on the fly. The shorter travel position is typically used for climbing, and the longer travel position for descents. There is no middle ground between the two positions, so you either have 160 or 130 (or 150 or 120). Some people with TALAS forks claim it's a useless feature because they never flip the switch while they're riding.
A 36 Talas is basically a 36 Float on which you can adjust travel length by toggling a switch (like from 130 to 160mm)
For FR you're better with a 36 Float. Talas is good if you climb a lot then descend fast. Full damper service is more tricky on the Talas and need more oil.

I will say that I found the reduction in travel feature on my last talas fork to be useful for long fireroad climbs. Basically put it in the cinched down position for climbing to the top of the dh trail. Then adjust it back up to plush for the dh.
That being said, I have a 36 float right now and it climbs fine, but that might be the new bike too.
Hi all, question: I really like the idea of the TALAS system. Why do most reviewers and riders prefer a FLOAT system over a TALAS because it feels better? Can't find a proper in depth answer on the internet. I know about max 160mm air version, which is a negative for me. Are there any others?

The TALAS uses a coil negative spring so unless you're within the design weight range (which Fox won't specify) it will be too soft (less small bump sensitivity) or too stiff (reduced travel, excessive dive).
It is not possible to use volume adjust spacers with the TALAS.
The spring volume is quite small so it is a high-pressure and quite progressive spring.
After years of using my TALAS RC2 I had my local repair shop (S4 Suspension) remove the TALAS assembly and replace it with a simple Float top cap. The difference was incredible; way way more sensitive and able to eat up chatter.
I'm at or below the minimum pressure for the TALAS air spring which made it very sticky.
I have a talas fork I can adjust from 150 to 120 and I love having the option to have shorter travel for climbing/most normal trail riding but then also love having the extra inch for the down hills...it's like having two bikes in one…I think the only negative about talas forks is they are heavier, but I'm more into fun on the down hills then I am in going a little bit faster on the uphills...
My question is this, can you change out the FIT4/RC2 damper on the 2017 Fox 36 Float to the TALAS damper? I'm just wanting verification as I can easily find and buy the Float but the Talas is much more harder to come by. Especially for 29ers.
