Hey guys,

I’m working on adding another line to my backyard trails and have to cross a creek twice after a high speed step down. Anyone ever ridden 2 whale tails back to back? I’m think the first one would be a step up them a step down to the next. Most I’ve ridden aren’t blind so that might be sketchy. My 2 boys and I will are the primary riders they are 16 and 10 they are good riders, but I don’t want to hurt them so keep that in mind. Pics would be amazing if you’d ridden something like this. Trying to figure out how to connect the trail from land to land. I need to make it about 125’ between a dirt lip and the landing all the way on the other side. It cross 2 low lying peninsulas so I have a place for posts. Good ideas welcome.

Thanks,
Tommy

Crap man that is ambitious. I think the concept is very cool, but that is a lot of wood work.

Firstly if you are buying dimensional lumber, those structures will cost several thousand dollars in supplies. Secondly, if you are making your own posts and boards, that is a herculean effort.

Have you considered braiding that low line from your new step down into that line above it with a berm to step up? That hillside between the two lines appears to be a great natural feature for a step up and you could potentially tie it into the landing of that table with some slight modification.

Yeah, we thought about combining them, but in the end we want more to ride and I already spent a ton of time making the last step up that you can’t see on the other side. Yes lumber is stupid expensive right now and it is going to cost about 3k, but my boys ride almost every day -we ride it a lot so I think it’s worth it. I’m thinking for the radius parts I’m going to sandwich 3/4” treated ply with vertical pieces of 2x6s that I can cut off to the same radius. So 3/4/2x6/3/4. Then I can join these to 2x12 for the flat parts. I’ll have one on each side for the joists. I’ll post some pics once I get one made. Thinking 12” tall. That might not make sense. I don’t know any other good way to make the curved sections. I think the hardest part is where to put the landing. I’ll have to build half of it just to try it.

I have made jumps by cutting curves into 2×10 pressure treated lumber with a dewalt electric chainsaw. But the plywood root also makes perfect sense.

No action on this feature . The sky high wood prices slowed me way down as did life in general. Hoping to get back rolling again this winter. I’ll post more when we make some progress. Thanks for asking.
