30mm or 35mm rim for 2.6" tires?

I'm planning to build up a 29er soon and am debating between 30mm and 35mm rims (specifically RaceFace Turbine R wheels). I will be using Vittoria 2.6" tires front and back (Mazza front, Martello rear) for the most part where the 35mm would probably be better, but may eventually downsize to a Maxxis Minion 2.5" DHF and 2.4" DHR2 combo where the 30mm would probably be better. My current bike uses 27.5" wheels with 2.6" Vittoria Martellos front and back on 30mm RaceFace Turbine R wheels and I have no problems with it, but wondering if it would be advantageous to get 35mm rims seeing as I'll be buying new wheels anyways

Definitely 30 if you might go back to Maxxis WT 2.5/2.4 combo. I run the WT’s on 25mm rims personally and they work great.

Just checked Maxxis' website (which I probably should have done first before making a thread) and they say "Wide Trail (WT) sizes optimized for 35mm inner width rims", so I think I'll go with the 35mm rims

I have 35mm internal and I have put on the rear a 2.35 with no issue. 2.6 in front and 2.6 on rear is usually what I have. It’s great. I went with the thinking if maybe I do 2.8 I would be fine as well. I have a 29 + hard tail.

Thanks for sharing your experience, I did end up going with the 35mm. I got the front here already, rear one is out of stock for a little while longer but should still be here before the tires are expected to arrive. I also just ordered some anodized purple tubeless valve stems from Muc-Off which will look sweet with the rest of the purple parts I have for the bike

Actually I guess I could have responded in a variety of ways. I just recently bought 30mm carbon rims for my full suspension 27.5 bike that I still have to build. I also recently bought 28mm carbon wheelset for my 29er short travel full suspension bike. Yes, I have too many bikes and I need help. LOL

Wide Trail (WT) construction optimizes the tire’s tread layout and profile on today’s modern, wider rims. Traditional tires are designed around older, narrower rims and can create an overly square tire profile, leading to less than optimal performance. WT tires are optimized for a 35mm inner rim width but are proven to work over a range from 30-35mm inner rim widths, depending on the rider’s preference.

Maxxis Wide Trail XC tires are optimized for use with 30mm internal width rims, but they will perform well on rims as narrow as 25mm. Maxxis does not recommend rims wider than 30mm or narrower than 25mm

I typically ride more all mountain stuff, so the main tires I'd be looking at from Maxxis would be Minions and Assegai, and maybe the Agressor, Dissector, and High Roller, all of which would probably be considered the standard WT

Thanks for the tip though, might come in handy if I ever decide to get more into XC stuff

I don't think it matters what Maxxis says. Most people have found 30i to work better with 2.4-2.5" Maxxis tires. Most racers are also running narrower rims than Maxxis's recommendation.

Dated response....

A "new" thing is to do different sized rims. Wider on the front to possibly support a wider tire (ex. 2.6) while running a narrower rim in the rear to support a skinnier tire (ex. 2.4).

It's probably splitting hairs / marketing, but if you can't fund 2 of one, run a 35 in the front and a 30 in the rear.

I think Crank Bros was doing it, but it was maybe 2-3mm difference. They also varies spoke counts front / rear, which isn't all that unusual.

I have a set of Nobl TR41’s. The front is 35mm inner width, the rear 34mm. I run a 2.5 Maxxis front and 2.4 rear. Both tires are DD casing. No issues with burping or folding. Im a heavy boy and ride rather aggressive. After a few rides though, I put the Cush core back in because I rimmed a few rocks. It’s pretty chunky where I ride with lots of square edges.
