This NuBike thing just popped up on my Facebook feed- https://nubikemfg.com/ It’s ugly as, but intriguing. I’d be interested to know what the PinkBike engineers think. It doesn’t have a chain, but does the concept have any legs?
The whole 'no more car racks' argument is a real stretch. Not sure about the better health claims because this thing lets the rider pedal straight up and down instead of in a circle - human legs go in a natural ellipse when walking or running. Also, some patients are encouraged to use cycling for physical therapy in injury recovery. And despite the claim that the rider will generate more power per pedal stroke, I think it will need more than 4 gears unless you live in a very flat terrain location. Otherwise it may have some merits.
This! Pedals that go around can deflect when they hit things. These would smash you to a standstill. Plus they look like they get a lot closer to the ground, and seem like they would be slower and more difficilt to move out of the way than traditional pedals which you can backpedal up with no resistance.
