After seeing hundreds of pointless threads and posts I thought it was time to make a thread about what not to do and what to do in the BMX forum. Everyone please read this before posting and you and all other Pinkbike users will enjoy the BMX forum much more. So here it goes.
First off I'll start off with what's directed at the "What bike should I get" threads. I'm sure mostly everyone is as tired of seeing them as I am so please if you are going to make a thread about this list the following:
-Your budget -The type of riding you will be doing -Where you will be purchasing the bike from -Some bikes that you are already interested in -Certain parts or features you want -Your height so people can help you choose a bike that will fit well
A better alternative to making an entire thread about this is to post in the Quick Question Thread or the Versus Thread. But before even posting, read Mike's BMX Guide and you will get a better idea of what to buy. Same goes for parts. You don't really need to make a thread about what parts you should buy. Read the BMX Parts Review thread and it will help you decide. If you still are undecided use the threads I listed previously.
Next about the games of B.I.K.E. For those of you who don't know what B.I.K.E is, it's a game where riders try to match each others tricks. There are always tons of threads for these games but very few of them get past page 2 let alone finish with a winner. If you create a thread for a game please be serious about it and don't bail out of the game in the middle of it. Not only does this frustrate the competitors but it's a waste of a thread. The same goes for the other competitors. Play until the game is finished. Try not to post comments in the thread too much unless you're posting a trick so it doesn't get off topic and clogged with pointless arguing. If you need to say something just post message the other players or write on their noteboards. As well when you are posting a trick make sure you define how it should be done (ex. 360 or 3 tap). For the creator of the game/thread please in your first post include the following criteria:
-Whether pegs/peg tricks are allowed -Whether the riders should have brakes or be brakeless -How many teams there are -How many people are on each team -Time limit for the tricks to be done/posted -Skill level -Type of riding (ex. park, street, dirt, flatland) -Whether a cassette or a freecoaster is allowed
Now for maintenance/bike repair and trick questions. It is often that people create threads asking about how to fix something on their bike or how to do a certain trick. Really there is no need to have an entire thread about this. For maintenance/repair and trick questions ask in the BMX Tech and Trick Tips thread. You can also share your tips there too. As well for trick questions/concerns you can ask a Pinkbike user you know can do the trick, how to do it. Or you can read the BMX Trick How-To Guide.
Fourthly for the threads about how to lighten your bike. Really with nowadays new bikes you shouldn't be too concerned about weight but for people who want an incredibly light bike and people with older bikes, weight can be an issue. If you read the Lighten Your BMX Guide you will find many useful tips on how to shed a few pounds off your ride. If you do feel the need to make a thread on the topic of losing bike weight please post specs of your bike, the current weight and post a picture. This will help people figure out what weighs a lot and why it weighs a lot. They will then be able to give you suggestions about what you can do to lighten it up.
Next for the brakeless arguments. Sometimes Pinkbike users start arguments about being brakeless or create threads about this. The topic has been covered many times and doesn't really need to be discussed much more. If you want to learn or hear some thoughts on the topic just use the search and you will find many threads on this. People ride brakeless or ride with brakes for their own various reasons. Whether it be your style or your tricks the choice is all based on preference. We don't need to tell others what to do so just let them decide. If they decide to keep their brakes on or take them off, so be it.
Oftenly there are users who ask questions about freecoasters. For those of you that don't know what a freecoaster is, it's a rear hub that allows you to fakie (ride backwards) without backpedaling. With a cassette or a freewheel style hub in order to fakie you must pedal backwards. Some questions people ask about freecoasters are:
-What is it? -How does it work? -Where can I get one? -How much does it cost? -What are the disadvantages of a freecoaster? -How often do I need to grease it/maintain it? -How do I maintain it? -How do I adjust slack? -Is more or less slack better?
To learn about freecoasters read the stickied Freecoaster Thread. If you still have questions after reading it then post them in there.
Lately I've been noticing people have been gravedigging old threads. By this I mean that people are posting in a thread that's very old (ex. 6 months-1 year). If the thread is a question type thread it is likely that the question has already been answered. If it's a new product type thread it's old news that nobody is really interested in anymore. You don't need to post in a thread that is that outdated as your post is probably no longer relevant. So please don't gravedig.
Now for arguments in general. I don't know about you but I hate arguing with other people and seeing others argue in the forum. It really gets on my nerves and just ruins threads. Discussing is totally different than arguing and we all know the difference between the two. Not to sound like a mom or teacher but when you see others getting into a heavy and nasty argument tell them to stop. If it's really bad (ex. swearing, racial and offensive posts) report the Pinkbike user to a mod. As for if you get into an argument and feel the need to continue it, please post message the other user or write on their noteboard. Really you shouldn't bother arguing with people as it's a waste of your own time but sometimes people want to "stand up for what they believe in" I guess.
If you are having trouble, want to report someone or have a question about the forum, the best thing to do is to contact a mod. Some mods that frequent the BMX forum are drewfunk, lettusdude and sherbet. Contact them for assistance.
Remember to always follow the rules of the forum that can be seen in the basic Forum Rules and Guidelines thread.
The last thing I'd like to mention is to have fun and enjoy the forum. We often neglect the privilege to use a wonderful free forum like Pinkbike so just follow the rules and enjoy yourself. Also, thanks to drewfunk for some help with this thread. I think I've covered most of it so that's a wrap. Now get to posting!
I think that tw3ak needs to read the arguing part...
I think we shouldn't be flaming. ;3
Sorry but don't you agree with me?
I'm sorry, but how's this relevant to the thread? If you've got an issue with another user, talk it out with them, or see a mod, don't trash talk on the forums.
