2017 East Coast Racing Schedule
Continuing our trend from the past couple of years, we've compiled a comprehensive Downhill/Enduro schedule for the 2017 East Coast US racing season. The events are listed three different ways for your viewing pleasure: 1. Annual which includes all races/all disciplines by month (Top of page), 2. Annual by discipline only - DH, Enduro, Super D (Middle of page), and finally 3. By Series/Resort (Bottom of page). We have included National US/UCI/EWS races in this schedule even though they are not east coast US events. Why? Because a lot of the racers that are planning their annual racing schedules are aspiring Pro/WC riders and some travel around the US, even overseas, to compete... so they important for planning purposes.

Summer operations are not lucrative for any resort in the southeast. I would much rather ride bikes than snowboard hardpack. However, Beech makes more money in a good winter month than 5 months of summer operations so they are going to promote winter season year round. It sucks for bikes but good business for them. Have you seen what Beech, Sugar etc look like on a busy winter weekend? 6k people in the winter vs 200 in the summer.
I don't know what tracks Preach was on but opening day at Beech 2016 was mint. Full disclosure for those that don't know me: I'm just a recreational level DH rider that can sling a wrench or two. The rest of the season was awesome too. The only season that wasn't great was the year it rained every weekend. So rather than bitch about it I loaded up on mud tires and made the most of it because I remember what it's lIke to not have shuttle/lift access.the only weekends that I haven't ridden at Beech were Pro Grt weekends or nationals.
I love melting laps on the beginner trail, not sure what he means by "pathetic". A lot of hard work went into those trails by a lot of really good people over the years. Trill along with all the guys from the Dirty Bird days know what it's like to not have any DH riding. So I for one am thankful for all the hard work from everyone in the Southeast. We are so lucky and fortunate to have places to ride. So if any of the trail builders, land owners, other staff members etc read this THANK YOU! Also huge THANK YOU to Jay and all the people out there that work behind the scenes to help promote DH in the southeast!
I don't think marketing generates the amount of interest in skiing/snowboarding. It's actually the other way around. I have worked at Sugar since 97 and Beech since 2013. The group (church group etc) numbers alone in the winter would shock you. Another thing to consider is tubing. You also have to remember that for every day session in the winter there is also a night session. I think you answered your own question about "is it the demographic" etc. Ultimately there is just more interest in winter sports than summer in the southeast. Winter sports appeal to a wider range of people. Even if they over marketed summer activities the consumer base just isn't there unfortunately.
Elevated has been up there several times this winter actually. I love Bailey and the Millers do an awesome job but it gets just as weathered and rutted as anywhere else.
Your first statement is just flat wrong so I had to say something... Sure they could invest more I guess but what more do you want for opening day than a fully buffed park? When you're out here speaking falsely about last year's opening day I've gotta speak up. Opening day is going to be mint AGAIN this year... Lol
Trust me, I'm hoping for better this year, and optimistically hopeful that they will maintain and build some actually fun trails.
But essentially the top of the mountain is just the places where the water runs down the side of the mountain already, doubling as a trail.
I've ridden at Whistler, KeyStone, NorthStar, Mammoth, Vail, Durango...So I know my standards are high, but you've got to do something more than offer 2-3 teeth-shattering DH runs and a pathetic beginner run. They have had years to step up their game. I'm not the only one saying this.
When I talk with the people who started Baileys in Mars Hill, they essentially said "We just kept hearing how Beech sucked and there needed to be another option in NC."
You know Elevated Trail Design has been working at Beech right?
